35YO Woman Delivers Child on Bathroom Floor While on WFH

Work from home stints is rather uneventful.

Maybe unless you’re the type to multitask and sing karaoke or even cook while waiting for things to do (or procrastinating them).

Sadly, your impatient boss won’t wait for you and neither will some things, like a baby.

Woman Gives Birth During WFH

You’d probably only expect to deliver emails, not an entire baby out of you.

The 35-year-old woman was heavily pregnant with her second child and had felt contractions on the morning of 12 April, Monday.

Instead of going to the hospital immediately, she and her husband felt that it was still too early to go to the hospital as giving birth to her firstborn lasted a whole seven hours.

She decided to remain home in their Fernvale Close apartment to monitor the situation first while she reported for her work from home.

Two hours after her contractions began, she was calmly typing out an email and headed to the toilet after she pressed send.

The last thing one would probably expect coming out of them when going to the toilet would be the head of a baby partially emerged, but that’s exactly what this woman saw.

Baby Waits For No One

Their baby must have really wanted to look out into the world and couldn’t wait any longer to greet its parents.

The woman’s husband commented that they were both shocked, as they didn’t expect the baby to make an appearance so soon.

Left with no time or choice but to handle the delivery himself, the man called the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s medical emergency hotline for help, armed with a bucket of water and some towels.

Paramedics instructed him to lay his wife down on the bathroom floor and support the baby’s head with both hands as she pushed with all her might.

Thankfully, the delivery was very smooth and it took only four minutes for the baby to be delivered fully, a far cry from the hours spent waiting for their firstborn.

Anyone would be terrified out of their wits having to deliver a baby on their own for the first time without any professional help, but the couple did it.

Despite his fear, the man recounted having a strange sense of calm wash over him the moment he saw the baby’s head, and could only focus on delivering the baby safely.

Now, that’s what we mean by fathers becoming Superman when it comes to their family.

Mother And Son Safe

Soon after the eventful experience, paramedics arrived at their home to cut away the umbilical cord, taking the woman and child to KK’s Women and Children’s Hospital.

Watching the doctors and nurses who delivered the couple’s first child, the man said he was able to deliver the baby while recalling what he learnt from them.

“Thankfully he took care of everything, if not I wouldn’t know how to handle [it] alone,” his wife praised.

How many dads can say they brought their children into the world?

Not many, which is why that’s the one thing this father’s looking forward to telling his son, who’s birth address is also marked as his home on his birth certificate.

In other words, the boy will never hear the end of it as he grows up, but his father does deserve the bragging rights.

Giving Emergency Birth From Home

It’s not an uncommon occurrence to have babies ready to pop fresh out of the oven when mothers haven’t even made it to the hospital yet.

Don’t worry if you ever find yourself in such a situation, for staying calm while you try and deliver the baby is of utmost importance. Here are some tips on how to do so:

Firstly, you should call 995 and await instructions from them while they get paramedics ready to go to you.

Next, obstructive garments like underwear should be removed, and the mother should either lay down or be propped sitting up, practicing deep breathing to stop the urge to push as much as possible.

When you can’t hold it in any longer, push the baby out slowly in counts of five until it fully emerges.

Finally, the baby should be held skin-to-skin with the mother once it’s out to wait for the placenta to come out as well, which should take around five to 30 minutes. Hold the baby’s body slightly raised above the head to allow mucus to drain.

After the placenta comes out, you’re in the clear to travel to the hospital via an ambulance.

What an experience it must be to deliver from home instead of simply working from home.
