A day at the water park turned into a painful ordeal for a 50-year-old woman, Ms Li, who suffered a coccyx fracture after playing on a four-story-high slide with her son. The incident occurred at the Wild Wild Wet water park located in Downtown East, and as of now, it is still unknown how she could have been injured.
A Wild Wild Wet Trip That Ended in the Hospital
According to Shin Min Daily News, Ms Li and her family, a total of four people, visited the water park on 21 August. Everything was going well until she and her son decided to take on the U-shaped slide, Slide Up.
Here is a video of the slide from a first-person angle:
After their first ride, her son was eager for another go, and she accompanied him for a second round.
Little did she know, this decision would lead to a terrifying ordeal.
As Ms Li and her son descended from the slide on a float, she suddenly felt a sharp, intense pain in her back. Despite her cries of pain, the float continued to slide back and forth, leaving her in a state of panic.
“After getting off the float, I was in so much pain that I couldn’t stand up and had to rely on my son to help me walk,” she recalled.
Initially, Ms Li thought it was a minor injury and attempted to alleviate the pain by relaxing in the lazy river within the water park.
However, the pain intensified, bringing her to tears.
Fortunately, a staff member noticed her discomfort and promptly assisted by applying a spray analgesic to the affected area and calling an ambulance.
“I was only wearing a swimsuit when I was admitted to the hospital, and I was shivering from the cold. I was terrified that I might become paralyzed,” Ms. Li shared.
According to the doctor’s diagnosis, she had fractured her coccyx and was advised to rest for two weeks, avoiding any heavy lifting or excessive exertion. “The pain was so severe at night that I tossed and turned, unable to sleep,” she added.
Ms Li expressed her confusion and frustration, as she was unharmed after the first ride but injured during the second.
She hopes that the management will take this incident seriously, conduct a thorough investigation, and take necessary measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Slide Up, according to the water park’s official website, is a four-story-high slide that allows riders to experience the thrill of descending from a half-pipe slide and rushing up the opposite U-shaped slide, sliding back and forth, kind of like skateboarding.
So, what happened?
A spokesperson for Wild Wild Wet stated that they were aware of the incident and are currently conducting an internal investigation while maintaining communication with the affected visitor.
It is still unknown what could have caused Ms Li’s injury.
What is Coccyx Fracture?
The coccyx, commonly known as the tailbone, is a small, triangular bone located at the base of the spinal column. It is susceptible to injuries that can cause pain, swelling, and bruising.
Experiencing pain while sitting or having a bowel movement may be especially painful. However, it is important to note that most tailbone fractures are not considered medical emergencies.
In the majority of cases, individuals can seek treatment from their healthcare provider rather than going to the emergency room (ER).
