Woman Bites Something Hard In Her KOI Bubble Tea; Turns Out To Be A Broken Fingernail

For many Singaporeans, bubble tea was their first love.

While other teenagers crushed on their classmates, we crushed tasty tapioca pearls with our mouths.

While others craved a kiss, we craved the sweet milk tea that soothes all our troubles.

Basically, it was love at first bite.

Unfortunately, not all Boba bites are created equal. Some are incredibly, incredibly disgusting.

Woman Bites Something Hard In Her KOI Bubble Tea; Turns To Be A Broken Fingernail

A Singaporean woman recently recounted her nasty experience with a KOI bubble tea on Stomp.

The woman, Anon, purchased a cup of green milk tea from KOI at Serangoon’s NEX at about 1.45pm on Tuesday (5 Nov).

Reader: Ooh green milk tea… I should get myself a glass right no-

PAY ATTENTION, READER. Because you might not get a glass for a few months after hearing what happened next.

The woman went back to her office in Lorong Chuan to enjoy the drink, but when she started chewing on some pearls, she bit something hard.

Was it ice? No.

Was it an extra hard pearl? No.

It was this:

Reader: What… what am I looking at here?

Oh right, I suppose it’s hard to tell from that image but it was a FINGERNAIL.

Anon says that when she bit the hard thing, she quickly removed it from her mouth and inspected it. She then realized it was a yellow fingernail.

Yes, it wasn’t a nice, clean fingernail from someone who had good personal hygiene. It was yellow. “Very yellow”, as she put it.

“I believe it’s a pinky nail since it looked rather small and narrow”, she added. At the time, she suspected that it fell into her drink as the staff was scooping out pearls.

Informed the KOI outlet

Anon then informed the Nex outlet from which she purchased her drink, saying she found a fingernail inside.

The lady on the phone said, “‘We’re very sorry, can you come down to NEX and we’ll give you a new drink.”

A man later came down to Anon’s office to give her a refund and a new drink. But would you still want another bubble tea after finding a fingernail in your previous one?

Reader: Oh hell yes

OK, I forgot who I was talking to.

Anon also went into further detail on how revolting the whole experience was, so much so that she forced herself to throw up.

“It was a pretty long fingernail. I don’t know how long it was but I didn’t want to look at it again afterwards. I felt very sick in my stomach and actually forced myself to vomit. I felt very uncomfortable, weird and just disgusted, and thought that puking it out would help me feel better.”

Who can blame her? Anyone would feel the same if they had just bit a fingernail (that was not their own).

KOI response

KOI has since apologized for the incident.

In response to a Stomp query, a KOI spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear of the experience this customer had on 05/11/2019.

“In KOI, we take Food Safety seriously. Every Outlet staff (including part timers & non-food handling roles) are sent for WSQ Food Hygiene Certifications.

“We are disappointed that this has happened despite our vigilance, and will continue to work with all our Outlets to keep our Food Hygiene Standards at the highest possible.

“We are glad that this customer has accepted a replacement beverage and a full refund of the first beverage on the day of incident.”

KOI’s response was good, and to be fair, people don’t usually find fingernails in their bubble tea. I have to admit, though, this woman’s nasty experience has dampened my love of bubble tea a little.

I don’t think I’ll be able to purchase one for at least a few hours, which may seem extreme to many Singaporeans, I know.

I’m sure even you, dear reader, might not get bubble tea for a while after hearing this lady’s disgusting exp-

Reader: *already sipping on bubble tea* Did you say something?

Dear lord, reader, get a grip.
