A woman in her 20s was arrested in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, Korea after threatening supermarket staff and customers with two knives while wearing a cat mask.
The incident occurred at 7:23 PM local time on 2 Aug 2025 in the toy section of a large supermarket in Okpo-dong. Police booked the suspect on suspicion of illegally possessing dangerous weapons in a public place.
Cat-Masked Suspect Waves Knives at Terrified Shoppers
The woman entered the supermarket wearing a cat mascot mask and gloves. CCTV footage released on the National Police Agency’s YouTube channel showed her first roaming the aisles quietly, observing people around her.
She then suddenly pulled out two knives and began waving them in the air as she walked through the store. The footage captured her holding the weapons aloft while moving through different sections.
Children who spotted her fled in fear as she raised the knives and moved toward them. Terrified shoppers scattered as the masked woman continued her threatening display.
Supermarket employees attempted to calm her down but were forced to back away when she advanced while still clutching the knives. She ignored repeated demands from staff to drop the weapons.
At one point, the woman ran directly toward employees who had grabbed umbrellas as makeshift protection. Staff members retreated as she approached with the knives still in hand.
Police Intervention Ends with ‘Meow’ Responses During Questioning
Police officers rushed to the scene and ordered the woman to drop her knives while aiming a Taser at her. The suspect eventually sat down, allowing officers to subdue and arrest her on the spot.
No one was injured during the entire incident. The quick response from both staff and police prevented any physical harm to shoppers or employees.
During police questioning, the woman responded to every question by meowing. When officers asked whether she had other weapons or why she was carrying knives, she replied with “meow” and “I can’t tell you, meow.”
Officers also inquired if she had a mobile phone, to which she responded: “Why would I tell you that, meow.”
Police later confirmed the woman had a history of mental illness. She has since been placed under compulsory psychiatric hospitalization following her arrest.
