Lest you’re unaware, there’s such a thing called maid abuse, where employers subject helpers to relentless physical torture and lacerations.
And lest you’re unaware, the maids didn’t sign up for it in the contract.
Probably. I mean yes definitely. Like, who would ever sign up for such horrific methods…
Who with a perfectly normal socially-acceptable mind, that is. But moving on.
Lest you’re unaware, abuse doesn’t just stop at the physical part. As bullied kids in school will surely testify to, there’s another kind of abuse more prevalent, and arguably even sharper than the pain inflicted by physical methods. I’m talking, of course, about verbal abuse.
Which leads to the topic of this article: a woman was caught on video yelling and reprimanding her helper to call a taxi, and while there was no evident abuse of any sorts…
I dare say it’s right on the brink.

What happened?
According to Stomp, the aforementioned incident occurred at Farrer Road MRT station, at 6:30 p.m. four days ago (15 Oct).
Stomper M, who managed to captured video footage of it, subsequently subtitled it and sent it to the local journalist site.
“I was waiting for my ride home when I heard the woman yelling at her helper,” she said.
“They were at the taxi stand before me, so I’m not sure how long they had been waiting for a taxi.”
The scene played out as follows:
It appeared to be drizzling.
The wind is blowing. Howling. And the employer, who’s decked out in a pink top and pink shorts, gets the ball rolling by shouting at her helper:
“The wind is blowing. If not, I don’t need you to do, ok?”
The helper then tries to flag a cab down, but her employee proceeded nonetheless. “I hate it when you argue with me. Just do what I tell you to do.”
(Sounds like my boss. I hope he’s not reading this.)
Attempts to get a cab faltered, however, and the employer can be heard saying “Sibei suay si”, which pretty much translates to ‘very unluckeh’ in good ol’ England.
“Normally got taxi one, but today no taxi,” she adds.
At that juncture, the employer seems to spot a wild prey and tells her maid to flag it down.
“Coming already one! Can you put your hand out? The green one. Oh my god,” she exclaims.
Shooting a look at her employer, the helper puts her hand out. The very next moment, a red Trans-Cab taxi stopped for them.
However, the maid’s ordeal would not end just yet, as the taxi driver declined their request to go to Hougang (so…typical, no?). After driving away, the helper looked at her employer and seemed to say something.
“You don’t ask me so much. You just put your hand out for a taxi can or not? Before I throw you here, ok?” her employer replied.
Thereafter, the employer spots another wild prey, and said: “Yellow one, yellow one.” The helper sticks out her hand, and a yellow ComfortDelGro rolls by for them. Thankfully, this particular one agreed to their request, and the helper opens the front door for her employer to enter. She then got into the back seat, and the cab drove off.

If you find yourself shocked by the employer’s tone and choice of words, you’ll surely empathise with Stomper M, who expressed her shock at witnessing such an event unfold.
“I was shocked when the woman started yelling at her maid,” she said.
“It seems that the maid was unable to differentiate between cars and taxis on the road so she was unsure when to flag for the taxi.”

Abuse
While no tell-tale signs of abuse were detected (or every secondary school kid would’ve been abused round the clock already), I felt that the way the employer treated her helper was nothing short of rude and if I may so tentatively put it, borderline verbal abuse.
And it seems that I’m not the only one feeling that way too.
And some, in an ironic twist of fate, gave the employer a taste of her own pie.
A spicy taco pie, I must mention.
I wonder if the foreign helper feels validated now.
I know I would.
Jkkkkk.
Conclusion (because every proper article needs a conclusion)
Treat someone how you will want to be treated.
It might not be as easy as it sounds, but if this particular incident doesn’t give you the motivation to do so, nothing will.
Stop treating your employees like dogs. I seriously hope my boss is reading, this, though.
