Deng Youcai, 30, from Guangxi province, met Ye Meidi at a friend’s wedding in 2016—a meeting that would change both their lives forever.

Deng fell in love at first sight. His parents had divorced and remarried when he was young, and he had dropped out of school early to work as a migrant worker in a big city.

Ye had already dropped out of university after being diagnosed with glioma—a brain tumour with a recurrence rate of over 90 percent.

Deng pursued Ye despite knowing about her condition. Although she initially rejected his advances, he told her he was ready to fight the illness by her side. Eventually, she said yes.

The couple married in 2019. During the ceremony, Deng made a heartfelt promise to Ye:

“I will treat you in the best ways in the world,” he declared.

Husband Spends Fortune on Treatment After Wife Falls into Vegetative State

The couple welcomed their daughter, Hanhan, in 2021. But their happiness was short-lived.

Ye’s glioma flared up in 2022. Before falling into a coma, she made a desperate plea to her husband.

She asked Deng to let her die, as they could not afford the cost of treatment.

Deng refused to give up. He spent 2 million yuan (US$280,000) on her medical care while simultaneously caring for their toddler daughter.

Ye underwent two rounds of surgery but remained in a vegetative state. Doctors advised the family to abandon hope.
