Woman Distraught After Apple Employee Who Serviced Her iPhone Sent Her Private Photo To Himself

When you bring your phone to the service centre, do you back up all your data and scrub it clean?

If you don’t, you might want to start doing so because the person serving you might not be as honourable as you think.

Just as this lady who brought her iPhone into Apply service centre has experienced.

A Normal Phone Servicing

On 4 November 2019, Gloria Fuentes went to an Apple store to get her iPhone screen repaired.

Before the appointment, she scrubbed her phone of all sensitive data and apps including banking apps and social media accounts.

Unfortunately, she didn’t have time to delete her photos too, but she handed her phone over to the employee anyway.

Seeming as though he was doing his job, she didn’t pay attention to him rifling through her phone, even telling him her passcode twice when he asked for it.

Then, She Realised Something’s Wrong

Turns out, she was right to be concerned.

When she reached home, she realised that a text has been sent from her phone.

Opening it up, she discovered, to her horror, that someone sent a personal photo she took for her boyfriend around a year ago to an unknown number.

To make things worse, the photo has her geolocation so the person now knows where she lives.

Confessions & Investigation

Enraged and worried, she made her way back to the Apple store.

She managed to speak to the store manager who said he’ll look into the matter. When she confronted the staff in question, he admitted that the number was his but maintained that he did not know how her photo was sent to him.

Apple conducted an internal investigation and found that the employee has “acted far outside the strict privacy guidelines to which we hold all Apple employees.”.

They added that the staff in question is no longer with Apple.

The police, meanwhile, said that they are investigating the incident.

Always Scrub Your Phone Before Servicing

If there’s one takeaway from the incident, it’s making sure you back up your photos and data properly and scrubbing your phone before bringing it in for servicing.

After all, the company might be reputable but the people they employed might not be.
