In Singapore, deaths are classed as “natural” if the death of the individual occurred due to a known medical illness (e.g. cancer) or a sudden stop in bodily function (e.g. sudden cardiac arrest).
If the cause of death is from external forces (e.g suicide, foul play), it is deemed unnatural, though the cause of death is not always immediately apparent.
On 16 May this year, during the circuit breaker, 32-year-old Wee Jun Xiang was found dead at Deck 4B of the multi-storey car park at Block 145A Bedok Reservoir Road.
He had suffered a heart attack.
However, the police classed the incident as an “unnatural death”, and we now know why.
Woman Charged Over Ex-BF’s Death
Alverna Cher Sheue Pin was charged on in court on Thursday (3 Dec) over the death of her ex-boyfriend, seven months after his passing.
While court documents didn’t provide more details of the incident, the 38-year-old woman faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
This means she committed an act with the intention to cause bodily harm or death, or with the knowledge that it could lead to death.
According to local Chinese-language media, Wee had died of a heart attack that day.
The victim was a composer also known as Sean, who released a song titled “You Are Gone” just two months before his death.
At the time, Wee was working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Suspect is Funeral Director Who Was Involved in Aloysius Pang’s Funeral
The suspect, Cher, is a single mother with two daughters and is the director of City Funeral Singapore.
In a blog post four days before Wee’s death, Cher detailed her struggles with the two fathers of her daughters, one of whom was sentenced to jail shortly after she gave birth.
According to TODAYonline, Cher’s company was also involved in the funeral of Aloysius Pang, the Mediacorp actor who died during a military exercise in New Zealand in Jan 2019.
She has also worked at MindChamps as an education coach.
Sole Breadwinner of the Family
In court via video, Cher requested to make three phone calls, one to a friend to pass some money to her children.
“I’m a single mother and the sole breadwinner, so I really need to pass money to my daughters and parents,” Cher said.
She also asked a friend to engage a lawyer for her.
Cher will be in custody until 10 Dec, when she will return to court.
If she’s found guilty of culpable homicide, Cher could face imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine.
