Hong Kong Woman Dies After Saving Neighbours During Deadly Tai Po Fire

A woman in Hong Kong died while alerting her neighbors to escape during the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po.

The lethal blaze has killed 146 people and injured 79 so far.

Upon receiving an evacuation notice, the woman chose to knock on doors along the 17th floor where she lived instead of evacuating immediately. Her actions saved four people and one dog.

After warning her neighbors, she retreated back into her home. Rapidly intensifying smoke and flames prevented her escape, and she eventually perished in the fire.

Her body was later found in her home.

Grieving Husband Shares Wife’s Heroic Final Moments

The woman’s husband revealed her heroic actions on a Tai Po residents’ Facebook group.

“She gave her own life to save the lives of four people and a dog,” he wrote. “The principles she upheld throughout her life remained unchanged until her last moment.”

The husband expressed profound regret over his wife’s death. “She has been with me for over 40 years and has shared my joys and sorrows, but I couldn’t be there for her when she needed me the most,” he wrote.

He blamed himself for not being able to help her during her final moments. “If I could have called her a minute earlier and asked her to leave, it might have been a better outcome.”

The husband added that he believed his wife would not have regretted her decision to help others.

The family described her actions as consistent with the principles she held throughout her life. They believe she made her final decision without hesitation.

Online commenters flooded social media with tributes praising her as a “true hero” whose “noble actions deserve respect.”
