Especially when we were younger, a number of us would be familiar with having a curfew.
And while it may sound annoying to keep to time, sometimes it could help us manage our activities properly.
Though the circuit breaker is not the kind of curfew Singaporeans would want to see again.
But have you ever had a curfew so strict you weren’t even allowed to work overtime and come home?
Locked Out By 7pm
This one is rather insane.
Lianhe Wanbao reported that a woman would apparently be not allowed home by her father if she came back past 7pm.
Yes, even if she has to end work late.
The 30-year-old told Wanbao that if she or her mother unlocked the door for her entry past 7pm, they would both be scolded.
It got so bad that sometimes the neighbours could hear them.
Pretty sure this is even worse than most teenage curfews.
Wanted To Ease Her Mother’s Burdens
The daughter would try her best to relieve the burden on her mother.
Every day, she would do her best to rush home before 7pm.
But what if she can’t do so?
She would inform her mother in advance if she really couldn’t make it.
The latter would help by texting her to quickly enter while her father was showering or if he went out.
Sometimes, the woman reportedly stayed out till midnight, when her parents were asleep, before coming home.
Subject To Abuse
If this was all that was happening, perhaps it wouldn’t be that bad. But the case goes a lot deeper.
The woman had to call the police earlier this year after she saw her mother being beaten by her father.
This case was referred to a social worker who found out that the woman was subject to long-time psychological abuse.
The father would frequently humiliate her verbally and would even get violent with her mother by slapping her.
And maybe you’re thinking: why not just move out? Wouldn’t it be easier? She’s, after all, 30 years old.
According to the woman, she didn’t want to move out as she didn’t want her mom to deal with her father alone.
If you are experiencing or witness any cases of domestic abuse, you can call the police at 999.
Alternatively, you can also find the necessary hotline here or go to the nearest Family Service Centre available.
Another Case Of Non-Physical Abuse
Abuse does not need to be physical, it comes in many shapes and forms.
And extremely recent case saw a Malaysian woman commit suicide in Singapore, due to alleged workplace abuse.
Her boss would apparently humiliate her verbally and set unrealistic sales goals, the latter causing her to be scolded again once not met.
Amongst other things, she was also fired before going on leave and was asked to pay S$1,000 for supposedly breaching her contract.
She committed suicide on 19 December after returning to her home in Malaysia.
The Ministry of Manpower has since commenced investigations into the firm. You can read more about it here.
