A woman was having an amazing time enjoying her mala hotpot when disaster struck: a Sichuan peppercorn got stuck in her throat.
After lots of rice, ice cream, and even poking at it with a chopstick, she ended up at NUH’s A&E to get the peppercorn out.
A Peppercorn Nightmare
A TikTok video by the user @fuyumimirai starts off with a view of the amazing steamboat meal she had for dinner.
With bubbling mala soup and a whole table of food, it looked like a very enjoyable night was about to come.
However, it turns out that while she was eating, a Sichuan peppercorn got stuck in her throat.
She said that she ate lots of rice and ice cream afterwards to try to get the peppercorn un-stuck, but it didn’t work. She even poked at her throat with a spoon and chopstick.
Finally, she decided to go to a nearby clinic to seek help, with the caption “mum probably wonders why is her daughter like this” over a few seconds showing the pair in the backseat of a car.
According to AsiaOne, the clinic wasn’t medically equipped to handle such a situation, and they suggested that she go to the Accident and Emergency department instead.
Fuyumimirai went to National University Hospital’s A&E, and you can just imagine how awkward it was to explain the situation to the doctors and nurses. In fact, the video is captioned “The faces of all the doctors and nurses when I told them about what happened… I cannot explain it to you.”
Speaking to AsiaOne, she said that the doctors and nurses smiled, but she could tell they were holding back laughter. However, everyone was super friendly and helpful, and she finally managed to get the peppercorn out of her throat.
At the end of the TikTok, she humourously said that this incident isn’t going to stop her from eating mala in the future. Spoken like a true foodie.

Similar Experiences
In the comments, some people shared that they also had a similar experience eating mala.
I guess Fuyumimirai can take solace in the fact that she is not alone?
Another comment asked if she kept the peppercorn as a memento, to which she replied, “No, I did not ask. I don’t want it either. I was in pain and the only thing I wanna do is get it out and get over with it HAHA.”
Moral of the story? Be careful when you’re eating mala.
