A woman suddenly appeared pushing a shopping cart across the Aye Expressway (AYE), forcing vehicles to swerve dangerously to avoid her.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 4 Jun 2025, around 4:00PM near Exit 10A close to Clementi on the AYE.

Dangerous Highway Crossing Caught on Camera

Witness Mr Guo (name transliterated from Mandarin) told Shin Min Daily News he was riding his motorcycle to Tuas Checkpoint, preparing to enter Johor Bahru.

He suddenly saw a woman pushing a cart appear in the middle of the expressway. She appeared to be heading toward the HDB flats on the opposite side.

The woman, estimated to be around 40 years old, shocked many road users with her dangerous actions. Several drivers honked their horns to warn her.

“She was crossing the road in such a dangerous way. If she had walked faster, we would have hit her,” Mr Guo said.

Dashboard camera footage shows Mr Guo riding his motorcycle when a woman wearing a headscarf suddenly crossed two lanes while pushing a cart.

She walked directly in front of a truck and a large lorry. The drivers managed to avoid her in time.

Pedestrian Bridges Available But Unused

Shin Min Daily News reporters visited the location on Thursday, 5 Jun 2025. They found a pedestrian bridge at the incident site with bus stops on both sides. The expressway section is busy with many heavy trucks traveling through.

The woman likely accessed the expressway through the bus lane exit at the bus stop. A male resident living nearby said he had never seen the woman from the video in the area.

Ms Tan (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 60-year-old member of the public, suspects the woman suffers from dementia. “I think no normal person would do that. After all, there are barriers in the middle of the expressway that you simply cannot cross,” she said.

Many netizens criticized the woman’s behavior in online comments. They expressed relief that no accident occurred, saying the consequences could have been disastrous.

Other comments noted that pedestrian bridges exist not far from the incident location. They questioned why the woman would risk her life crossing the road illegally.

While the woman’s dangerous crossing on the AYE fortunately did not result in injuries, similar incidents on Singapore’s expressways have ended in tragedy.

In June 2023, a 40-year-old man died after being struck by a car in the Central Expressway tunnel, highlighting the severe risks pedestrians face when entering high-speed roadways where foot traffic is strictly prohibited.

According to the Land Transport Authority, pedestrians are not allowed on any expressway or in tunnels, and such actions not only endanger the individual but also put drivers and other road users at significant risk.

The incident also underscores a broader pattern of unusual pedestrian behavior in the Clementi area.

In a separate case, a man who missed his bus at a stop near the AYE stood in the middle of the bus bay to block the next bus, forcing it to brake abruptly and drawing criticism for his reckless actions.
