Oh, look, another PMD related accident.
The topic is akin to this: “Shocking: Water Found in Singapore River”.
You know, this has become so common this last month that I’m almost not surprised when it happens nowadays.
Which is upsetting, seeing how no one likes to hear about accidents.
Unfortunately, today’s incident had quite a fair amount of consequences for the victim.
Like 30-stitches-on-you kind of consequence.
Once again, I’d like to remind you it’s probably because of things like this that we’re getting this massive restriction on PMDs in Singapore.
Reckless Riding
On March 29 last year at about 9.30pm Tham Chee Boon, 36, was approaching a traffic light junction near Block 362 in Woodlands Avenue 5 on his e-scooter.
At the same time Madam Yeo Eng Koong, 53, was along the same path when she heard loud music approaching her.
Usually the first sign of bad things to come on a walkway: a guy listening to music too loudly.
Thank goodness Tham managed to notice her in time and quickly slamming the brakes on his device to avoid hitting her.
In less fortunate news, Madam Yeo got shocked by the sudden approach and fell backwards, hitting her head on the ground.
Maybe riding at 10km/h while totally not paying attention to your surroundings isn’t such a good idea?
Physical and Monetary Damages To Madam Yeo
You really got to feel bad for Madam Yeo.
Her fall left her with head injuries, bruises on her chin and neck, as well as a cracked tooth.
When she was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, further examination revealed a fractured skull and a blood clot in her brain.
She even had to go for an operation which left her with 30 stitches, all of which were removed in 11 days.
I’d be freaking the heck out.
After being in intensive care for two days, and being in and out of the hospital for another 13, she was given three months of medical leave. Well deserved, honestly.
But if you’re wondering if all that stuff was expensive? Well, bad news.
Her medical expenses amounted to about $18,000 and her dental surgery required another $4,900.
Even though the accident happened over a year ago, Madam Yeo still claims to have frequent headaches and tires easily.
Tham’s Side
At least this guy didn’t try to make excuses or run from his misdeeds.
Tham pleaded guilty on Wednesday to causing grievous hurt to Madam Yeo by riding an e-scooter in a negligent manner and was fined $3500.
I know he didn’t cause harm intentionally or directly, but it still feels kind of bad cause Madam Yeo suffered more damage.
Tham also tried to apologise to her in a text, though she was unable to reply as it was during her hospitalisation.
Madam Yeo responded eventually, stating that she “did not want him to go to jail and have his future ruined.”
Pretty sure after being let off the hook, Tham would hopefully be more careful about riding his PMD more carefully.
Even Madam Yeo mentioned that she would also be more careful, to double-check her surroundings for any e-scooters coming her way.
Just remember guys, someone being nice about such a grave accident doesn’t give you the right to be reckless.
