This is the smartphone era. The era where things on a little screen are so much more interesting than what’s going on around you right now.

I mean, a mom was so glued to her smartphone she didn’t even notice her daughter fall onto the train tracks.

And it’s a common sight to see people glued to their screens even when they’re walking on the streets or crossing the roads.

Well, if you’re someone who walks on the streets with your eyes on your phone or playing mobile games every waking moment, you might want to stop doing that.

If not, what’ll happen to this poor girl could happen to you next.

Woman’s Fingers Paralyzed in ‘Smartphone’ Position

According to World of Buzz, a woman in the capital of Hunan, Changsha had to go to the hospital for help.

Her problem? She played with her mobile phone so much her fingers got stuck in the ‘smartphone’ position.

And it’s all because of overusing smartphones.

On The Mobile Phone Most Of The Time

The woman had taken a week off work and decided to spend the week resting. Besides sleeping, she was on her smartphone almost all the time.

When she goes to bed at night at around 9:00 p.m., she’ll use her smartphone until midnight before she sleeps.

Every waking moment, she’ll be on her phone playing surfing the internet or playing with her apps.

She woke up one morning and felt great pain in her right hand. Her fingers were stiff and she couldn’t straighten them out.

Worried that the injury might be something serious, she went to the hospital for help.

The Woman Was Suffering From Tenosynovitis

At the hospital, the doctor diagnosed her with tenosynovitis. It’s a condition where an individual suffered from an inflammation of the fluid sheath surrounding a tendon.

It’s caused by repeating the same motion every day.

Luckily for her, the doctor managed to treat her condition and she regained normal movement in her hand again.

The doctor said that the younger generation is more prone to the condition, given that they’re spending most of their time on the smartphone.

His advice is for them to put their smartphones down from time to time and let their hands rest.

It’s Not Just Your Hands

If some of you are thinking, aiya, won’t happen to me one lah. I don’t spend every waking moment on my phone, that’s true.

While not that serious, excessive smartphone usage can also negatively affect your spine (posture) as well as your breathing?

I mean, after all, that’s why the generation we are today is known as the 低头族 (people with lowered heads).

So the best thing to do? Put away your smartphones from time to time. Just plug in your earpiece, stream Spotify and bob your head to the beat.
