Worried About Pokémon Go Data Usage? This Will Make You Relieved

Pokémon Go has taken over the world by storm. From Justin Bieber chasing after Pokémon in the middle of NYC to the police breaking up a 400-people gathering, the game shows no signs of letting up.

In just a few months (although we’re hoping weeks), Pokémon Go might just arrive at our sunny shores. If you’re one of the unfortunate souls with a 3GB data limit (myself included), chances are you’ll be worried about the data consumed when playing the game, what with the game making use of GPS and location services.

Turns out? Not that much.

Despite using GPS to locate Pokémon, it doesn’t stress cellular networks as much as navigation apps, which keep redrawing the map.

Naturally, I put these claims to the test.

After five solid minutes of gameplay (and capturing a rogue Bulbasaur and Spearow) later, this was how my Singtel plan held up:

1.3MB in 5 minutes. Which translates to 15.6MB per hour. A little more than WSJ’s findings, but still pretty reasonable.
