Let’s talk mosquitoes.
Specifically, these mosquitoes.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito, or what we commonly know as, the ones to bring us dengue fever.
In case you’ve missed it, Singapore’s pretty much a paradise for mosquitoes to breed.
There are plenty of nooks and crannies for them to hide in, and the climate here could make a booming, lucrative mosquito farm, if there’s a demand for mosquitoes, that is.
As a wise man once said, there’s always a use for something. But for mosquitoes, we’re always looking for something to keep them away.
And now, the National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore reported a sharp increase in dengue cases
According to a chart provided by the NEA, the number of dengue cases reported in the first 2 weeks of 2019 alone increased sharply to 248 cases.
That’s 41 more cases than the first week of 2019.
And comparing it to the same time period, the number of cases reported is the second highest across 2015 to 2019.
And the reason is due to an increase in the number of Aedes mosquitoes in Singapore
It was detected that there are 40% more Aedes aegypti mosquito population detected in Dec 2018, compared to Dec 2017.
And it’s a key concern: if the population is not successfully controlled, we’ll be looking at a sharp rise in dengue cases this year.
There are currently 55 active dengue clusters in Singapore
Active dengue clusters are categorised by their colours.
Red for clusters with more than 10 cases, and yellow for clusters with less than 10 cases.
Here’s the list of active dengue clusters for your reference.

Do The Mozzie Wipeout
The Government can go around spraying pesticide but honestly, you’ll need more than that to deal with these pests.
Everyone needs to do the mozzie wipeout.
Here’s one catchy song from Mr Brown that’ll entertain you while you’re doing the wipeout.
- Change the water in your vase every other day.
- Flip your water containers over
- Clear the water from plate beneath
- Cover laundry pole holder when not in use
After all, crowdsourcing’s the in-thing now, right?
