China Defends Wuhan Pool Party Footage, Said It’s a ‘Strategic Victory’

Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane.

Think back to when the COVID-19 outbreak was first reported in Wuhan, China.

The capital was also the first to go on an insane lockdown situation with no one in or out.

Recently, however, Wuhan has gone viral for something somewhat corona-related but with a slightly different take.

And depending on how you see this, it’s either going to scare or puzzle you.

Pool Party

Recently, a video has been circulating the internet of a pool party in Wuhan.

And if your first response is, “Where got time to party in COVID-19?” well, I wouldn’t blame you.

But just take a look at how massive this is.

Yeah, thousands of human bodies pretty much touching each other.

According to Chinese authorities, this showed how well China had dealt with the disease by having a massive party.

CNA also mentioned that China reported on 20 August that there have been four straight days of zero new virus cases.

Australia’s Daily Telegraphed even headlined this situation with “Life’s a beach in Wuhan as world pays virus price”.

Responding Back

Naturally, people overseas were pretty upset.

Some called it irresponsible, saying that there was no way this wouldn’t spread the virus further.

So what did China’s nationalist Global Times newspaper do? They just told these people they were ‘sour grapes’.

China said that the pool party showed the city’s “strategic victory” against the outbreak. They even used the images as proof that they had dealt with the virus well.

Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian mentioned seeing reports about shocked Americans and Europeans.

He also agrees with the sentiment of the pool party being a strategic victory.

However, Zhao also requested the media to “report the real situation in China” so people abroad could understand the country’s fight against the epidemic.

You can view his statement in the video below.

The video also shows interviewees in Beijing who feel the pool party is some kind of reward and ‘release’ after managing the virus well.

As of this writing, there have been over 22 million cases of coronavirus victims. Among these, around 781,162 have been killed.

According to a BBC report, there have been no new virus cases in Wuhan since mid-May.

Regardless of how it’s like abroad, let us still do our part to practice safe distancing measures here in Singapore.
