A XiaoHongShu post recently went viral for its list of the Top 10 most beautiful school uniforms in Asia. However, the post didn’t go viral for the reasons you’d expect.
It went viral because the school uniforms were inaccurate. Here’s what you have to know.
XiaoHongShu Posts Lists Singapore’s School Uniform as Top 10 But Uses a Photo of Malaysian School Uniform
On 26 September, a XiaoHongShu user posted a ranking of Asia’s Top 10 most beautiful school uniforms.
Huh? XiaoHongShu is simi?
If you didn’t already know, XiaoHongShu is a little like “Chinese Instagram”. You can find out more about the social media platform here:
Anyway, the XiaoHongShu post ranks Asia’s Top 10 school uniforms as follows:
- Japan
- China
- Korea
- Vietnam
- Philipinnes
- Thailand
- Malaysia
- Indonesia
- India
- Singapore
Yes, you read that right. While Singapore made it to the Top 10 in Asia, we’re unfortunately at the bottom of the list — not very palatable for the kiasu Singaporeans in all of us.
So, why were we at the bottom of the list?
No, it’s not because they used a photo of the St Marg’s Krispy Kreme uniform…
It’s because the XiaoHongShu user had used this school uniform to represent Singapore’s school uniform:
We don’t know about you, but the photo looks like any generic photo of a blue pinafore… And we’ve definitely never seen a uniform like this in Singapore.
If you’re thinking the same, you’re right — this uniform is not a Singapore school uniform. Instead, according to the comments left on the post by other confused netizens, the uniform is from Malaysia.
Can someone tell them again that Singapore is not part of Malaysia? Someone needs to brush up on their geography.
Other Countries’ School Uniforms Also Appear to be Misrepresented
If the “Singapore” school uniform in the post was actually a Malaysian school uniform, does this mean the post featured two Malaysian school uniforms, given that Malaysia was ranked seventh in the list?
Well, no. Apparently, the user also got Malaysia’s school uniform wrong. Here’s what the user tagged as Malaysia’s school uniform:
As one netizen was quick to point out, the skirt appeared to be too short to be part of a Malaysian school uniform, as school uniforms in the Muslim-majority country generally have longer skirts falling below the knees.
So, where is the “Malaysia” school uniform actually from? Many netizens agree that the uniform seems to be from Taiwan instead.
If this were a geography test, this user confirm plus chop will fail.
And if you thought that Singapore and Malaysia’s school uniforms were the only uniforms misrepresented in the XiaoHongShu post, you’re wrong.
Netizens also noted that even China’s school uniform, as represented in the post, was inaccurate.
Netizens remarked that the uniform depicted for China is usually only worn in private schools.
I suppose this whole XiaoHongShu post is just a lesson on why you shouldn’t trust everything you read online lah.
