As most Singaporeans would know, there are a few things to be wary of when you visit the troubled residential town of Yishun:
- cat murderers
- human murders
- neighbours from hell
- rats
- more cat murderers
In recent years, Yishun seems to have shed its bad-boy image, as there have been fewer reports of the things listed above.
But now, residents and visitors of Yishun might have another thing to worry about: grease-trap covers.

Man in Yishun Fell into 1-m Grease-Trap Cover
A 57-year-old man fell into a 1-metre pit in Yishun after he stepped on a grease-trap with a defective metal cover.
According to TODAYonline, the incident took place outside a coffee shop at Block 732 Yishun Avenue 5 on Sunday (27 Dec) morning.
The metal lid was covering a grease trap, which can be found outside coffee shops.
It helps to capture oil from the coffee shop’s wastewater.
These grease traps are “under the maintenance of the coffee shop owner”, the town council said.
For some reason, the metal lid gave way when the resident, Colin Pereira, stepped on it, and he fell into the 1-metre deep pit.
Witnesses rushed to his aid and placed chairs around the hole to prevent others from falling into it.
The 57-year-old suffered cuts and bruises on his right knee, and pulled his back muscle as well.

When paramedics arrived, Mr Pereira declined to be taken to hospital.
However, the pain only got worse as the day wore on, and he decided to go to Mount Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
There, he also underwent an X-ray.
Coffeeshops Reminded to Conduct Checks Regularly
Speaking to TODAYonline, a spokesperson for the Nee Soon Town Council said it will be sending out a letter to all coffee shops in Nee Soon town, to remind them to conduct regular checks and maintenance of their grease-trap covers for the sake of public safety.
The town council is also in contact with Mr Pereira. The coffee shop is reaching out to him too.

Even though the 57-year-old contacted his MP, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, who told him the town council will pursue the matter, Mr Pereira is not pleased.
He believes there’s a lack of transparency about the safety processes concerning the metal covers, and is planning to take legal action against the town council.
As he said: “This time, it was me but my greater concern is what would happen had a child fallen in.”
