Okay, I’ve got to admit: this is not exactly new news.

But it’s not old as well. And given that I’ve just withdrawn money from one of these machines yesterday with my ATM card, I can say that it’s one goody machine that’ll be useful.

Sheng Siong $TM Machine

In 2018, The Straits Times reported about this machine called $TM.

Not many people knew about it because it’s too premium for laymen like us.

Back then, it was only available in two Sheng Siong outlets: the one in ITE Central and the outlet at Blk 417 Fernvale Link. Their plan is to have the machine in every Sheng Siong outlet by the first half of 2019.

And I’m glad to say that it’s now the second half of 2019, so it should be in every store now.

So, what is it and why is it newsworthy?

An ATM Machine That Allows You to Draw As Low As $10

You see, this isn’t just a normal ATM machine: it allows you to draw cash from the four local banks, namely DBS, POSB, OCBC and UOB.

I’ve tried it yesterday and it worked just like a usual ATM without the queue. All I need to do is to select the amount, insert the card, key in my pin number and the cash will be dispersed.

Because I eat full nothing to do, I stayed at the area for a full fifteen minutes and realized I was the only one who’s used the machine.

And most importantly, you can draw just $10—perfect for people who often have $11 in their POSB account and couldn’t draw out any money.

However, do note that the machine can only be used to draw cash and nothing else. That’s actually goody because we won’t have to wait twenty minutes for someone to transfer money to ten people.

Why Got This Machine Ah?

Why not just place a normal ATM there?

Apparently, the cash you’ve taken out isn’t from the banks, but from the cash sales on that store. Called a “cash recycling machine”, the staff won’t need to deposit large amount of daily cash sales to the bank since it’s “recycled” back to me.

It’s a first in Singapore, though I think it’ll remain a first since many people are going cashless—I can almost feel a young crowd looking at me while I withdraw cash from the green machine, wondering if I’m born in the 1980s or 1880s.

After all, in the Sheng Shiong outlet I was in, the “cashiers” merely scan and put my items into a carrier; I’ve to make payment with a machine even when I’m using cash.

So while this is an interesting concept, I bet it won’t take off.

Still, it’s an option for someone who needs to withdraw $10!
