We’re surrounded by lots of items in our life that are disposable. I’m talking about things like wet wipes, diapers, plastic forks and spoons. One specific item which we use a couple of times in a month are disposable razors.
They’re handy, and you can throw them away when you feel that they aren’t working at their best. But really though, how long can a disposable razor last? Especially when you think about the times where we’ve left it to soak in the tub for an hour or two. Disposable doesn’t necessarily mean that you use it once then you throw it away. You could use it for a couple of times and chuck it into the bin when it doesn’t seem like it’s shaving your beard properly. Or if there’s rust on it.
If you’re going to use the shaver for a handful of times, maintain the razor by rinsing it after each use. This can extend its lifespan by a few weeks. Always check if there’s some gunk or rust on it before you apply the razor blades onto your face or body.
There are semi-disposable razors in the market these days, which allow you to change the blades, but carry on with the razor handle. A decent razor handle can last for a few years. You would need to make sure that the replaceable blades you purchase match the handle. Do that, or you’d be stuck with four or eight replaceable blades and a handle that doesn’t fit.
One replaceable blade head can last for around four to seven months. Based on this calculation, a pack of 4 razor heads can pretty much be used for a little over 2 years. Now, to answer your question again. A disposable razor or a razor cartridge can last you much longer than the advertised weekly guarantee.
The bottom line is that you’d need to check on it periodically to see if it’s still sharp and does a good job, and that there’s no rust. There’d also be a need to change the cartridge earlier if you’re a person who shaves against the grain. You’d also be inclined to follow your instinct.
If it’s time for it to hit the bin, it probably is. A disposable razor, after all, doesn’t cost as much, and replacing it is going to cost a dollar or two at most! Top Image:
