If you had no money left in your account, what would be your first reaction? Is it our fault or the bank’s fault? Obviously, most of us would spend our time wondering and scolding ourselves for being such spendthrifts. However, this is not so obvious to a man in China, who had a very different reaction upon realising that his account was empty, thus not being able to withdraw any money.
He took to venting his anger at the machine instead, by pouring Coca-cola over two ATM machines. The man, later identified as Zhang Mo, then fled the scene but he was unaware that a security camera had caught him on tape inside the bank. He left the bank with damages of about 50,000 yuan (approx S$10,000)
It took the police near 2 months to catch the culprit, as he had already left the town, being on a temporary work permit. Although they turned up at his home, he was not there. The police also contacted his ex-employers to no avail. He was eventually captured at Nanchang and will be facing charges for public vandalism and on top of that, evading justice.
Another more intriguing yet similar case was when a woman poured Coca-Cola over an ATM machine, believing that it would spit out money. She was the unfortunate victim of a cruel prank, as an unknown caller claimed to be a government official who would arrest her if she didn’t pay up her supposed “loans”. The caller then convinced her that she would be able to get the money by pouring Coca-Cola over the ATM.
In China, such cases regarding ATM vandalism acts are not rare, as there have been many cases whereby people attacked ATMs before. For example, a man defecated on an ATM while an 88-years-old granny even smashed one up with the help of a hammer. Savage much?
