Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s my honour to reveal that…
Youtube has an all-new most disliked video on site.
Yes, Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ has officially been dethroned, and I know what you’re wondering.
Which video is it?
Is it Shopee’s baby shark?
A self-professed leaked video of Aquaman?
Or gods forbid, a second Suicide Forest adventure by Logan Paul?
Well as it turns out, not quite, for the most disliked video in Youtube’s history seems to have hit a lot closer home.
A lot, a lot closer home.
Youtube Rewind 2018
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I’m talking about YouTube’s yearly affair, the Youtube Rewind installation.
A video series produced and created by YouTube and Portal A Interactive, these videos are an overview, and sometimes a recap of each year’s viral videos, events, trends, and music.
And they’re pretty, for lack of a better term, popz too. At least based on last year’s video.
Though it seems that the ‘favourability’ bar leaves much to be desired, with 3.9M likes squaring up to 2M dislikes. Admittedly, it’s not that bad, but hey like what they always say…
They could definitely do better.
And then in comes Youtube Rewind 2018
If you thought that the approval rating for 2017 was bad…
You’ve obviously never seen 2018.
For this year’s edition isn’t just bad.
It’s stinking bad.
With 2.2M likes facing against a monstrous 11M dislikes, it’s clear;
Netizens didn’t like what they saw.
And quite unfortunately, I could kind of relate.
It was wrong from the get-go
Youtube said it themselves:
But it’s kind of ironic, considering how the man who started the video…
Was Will Smith.
I mean sure; the man has 4.2M subscribers to his name.
But he’s hardly the guy to go to for a YouTube venture, right?
Hollywood, a definite yes. But YouTube?
There are way more qualified people out there.
Plus, you know it’s bad if half of the people you saw inside the video aren’t exactly recognisable. Like…
Where on Earth are all the big shots? PewDiePie? Ryan Higa? Goody Feed cats? Goody Feed dogs? My cat’s only owner?
But no.
Here, you can watch the ‘offending’ video for yourself down here.
Youtube starlets themselves join in
Throughout the video, you kind of get the notion that…
Youtube doesn’t actually know what its community wants.
For one, there are so many cringe moments you actually get used to it.
For two, popular references, like K-Pop, Fortnite dances, etc. etc. were used in such crude fashion they don’t even seem relevant. And let’s not even talk about the re-emergence of Baby Shark.
And for three… it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Or eyes.
Indeed, the situation got so bad several YouTube stars have also expressed their disapproval of the video.
And PewDiePie’s one of them.
You can watch the ‘review’ video down below:
Alongside a whole host of other Youtubers.
What’s next?
Considering how Justin Bieber’s Baby took 8 years to reach 10M dislikes, and Youtube just 8 days for the same figure…
You kind of get how unpopular the 2018 version really is.
As such, I really hope that YouTube starts listening to its viewers. Not the crude stuff as expressed in the video itself…
But what the community wants as a whole.
Because really, I love YouTube just enough…
That I don’t wanna see it self-destruct once again.
