From teenagers gulping down Tide Pods to people trying to kick their buddies’ feet from under them while they jumped (a.k.a. the Skullbreaker challenge), there seems to be no limit as to what some attention-hungry people would do when it comes to their 5-minute (or less!) of internet fame.
And needless to say, not everyone got out of their lapse in judgment in one piece.
In Singapore, apparently, we’ve got our brand of homegrown attention seekers who would go to extreme lengths for those few seconds in the spotlight too.
Introducing Singapore’s Darwin Award Winner of 2021… So Far
Posted on Facebook by SG Road Vigilante, the short 38-second TikTok video features a sunglasses-wearing young man, who looked to be in his early twenties, in a black polo shirt, short pink beige pants, and plain slippers.
He’s shown prancing along to music on the road at night while taking occasional puffs of the lit cigarette between his fingers, trying wayyy too hard to look like a “badass”.
Viewers were shocked to see cars and motorcycles passing behind him as he did what barely passes as dancing.
In a way, it just seems like he’s just hopping from one foot to the other while pointing to the ground with his free hand most of the time.
A user even commented that it just looks like his butt is too itchy and he’s too paiseh (embarrassed) to scratch it in public.
Definitely not the “最Heong的臭Ah Beng” (the most ruthless Ah Beng) as sung by JSAW in the clip.
Unfortunately for Some, Everything on the Internet is Eternal
Due to the dangerous stunt depicted in the clip, TikTok has long since removed the video from its platform.
However, if there’s one thing to know about the internet, it’s that nothing is truly removed… and yes, this means that your awkward, cringy photos you may have put up on Friendster or MySpace, back when those two were still a thing, is definitely still there… somewhere on the “interwebz”.
Copies of the video has re-surfaced on social media, bringing the incident to light… though, maybe not the kind of light the guy in the video is hoping for.
And rightfully so, many social media users who’ve seen the video strongly condemned the man’s antics on the road, as he had placed not only his own life on the line for a stupid stunt (that ended up getting removed from TikTok anyway), but also the danger he posed to other road users.
Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes
Although “being dumb” isn’t illegal in Singapore, several users helpfully pointed out that the guy isn’t wearing a face mask in a public area, i.e. the road, which unfortunately for the “Ah Beng” in the video, is actually an offence that carries up to a S$1,000 fine (S$300 for first offenders) under the government’s Covid-19 regulations.
However, technically, one can take off his mask while smoking or filming / taking images, but hey: we’d be more than happy to see him receiving the fine.
One social media user even suggested that maybe the man could be charged under “Jay Dancing” which we can only assume carries the typical jaywalking fine that can amount up to S$1,000 or a 3-month stint in jail.
Of course, the person behind the smartphone capturing the whole thing should be charged as an accomplice as well. It’s only fair, after all.
