Are you someone who knows that the main character in The Legend of Zelda is Link, and not Zelda?
Well, if so, this news will warm the cockles of your heart.
Nintendo has officially announced that the first-ever live-action film adaptation of its popular The Legend of Zelda game series will hit theaters worldwide on 26 Mar 2027. The Japanese gaming company revealed this information on Friday, 28 Mar, through its newly launched Nintendo Today! app.

The upcoming film will be directed by Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Veteran producer Avi Arad, whose portfolio includes all live-action Spider-Man movies and the Spider-Verse animated features, has signed on as producer.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the original creator of the Zelda franchise and Nintendo representative director, will also contribute to the production.
Nintendo first revealed plans for the film in November 2023, saying the project had been in development “for many years.”
Unlike past licensing approaches, Nintendo is taking a hands-on role in this production.
“We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production,” Miyamoto stated during the initial announcement.
No plot details or casting information have been disclosed at this time.

The Legend of Zelda series, introduced in 1986, follows the adventures of an elf-like warrior named Link who battles through fantasy worlds to help Princess Zelda protect their land of Hyrule from dark forces led by the villain Ganon.

Since its creation, the franchise has sold more than 140 million games worldwide.
The franchise currently boasts 21 main entries and numerous spin-offs, cementing its position as one of gaming’s most successful properties.
The most recent main game, Tears of the Kingdom (2023), became the fastest-selling title in the saga’s history. The latest side adventure, Echoes of Wisdom, was released in 2024.
This theatrical release marks a significant step for the Zelda franchise, which was previously adapted only as a 13-episode animated series in 1989.
The announcement comes during a busy period for Nintendo, which recently hosted a Direct showcase and is preparing for an anticipated presentation about the Switch 2 console on 2 Apr.

Nintendo’s strategy shift toward film adaptations follows the remarkable success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which generated $1.36 billion at the box office in 2023, second only to Barbie that year.
A Super Mario sequel is already scheduled for April 2026, preceding the Zelda film by nearly a year.
This approach differs dramatically from Nintendo’s previous movie venture in 1993, when a poorly received Super Mario Bros. live-action film led the company to avoid Hollywood collaborations for decades.
