Everybody wants to make it big in life, to be successful, rich and happy. I’m sure you’re one such person too! But whoever said that it was easy is certainly lying. Do you often envy Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah or Bill Gates? All of them have worked hard to achieve and become where they are today.

To be successful, there are a number of factors that you have to possess in order for you to climb your way up. So instead of sitting there envying other successful people, here’s 10 common habits that you have to get rid of or it’ll be tough to make it big in life.

Not living each day as if it were the last
Many people always say, ‘Stop to smell the roses’. But do everyone do that, really? There may not be literally roses for you to smell, but remember to stop and live in the moment. Life can be chaotic and what you’re aiming for may be a long-term goal in the future, but looking at such a big goal may often get you frustrated. Break it down and look at small goals along the way, enjoy the ride and you’ll find that you will be happier and at a higher chance of being successful.

Sleeping your day away
This one is pretty logical, right? How to be productive and work towards your goal when you’re busy snoring half the afternoon away? Unless you’re working on a sleep study backed up by science or whatnot, waking up early and having a consistent sleep pattern plays an important role in productivity. Having enough sleep (not the 8 hours that you started at 3am), helps improve your mental clarity, energy and creativity.

Comparing yourself with others
Like the saying by Louis C.K goes, “the only time you look in your neighbour’s bowl is to make sure that they have enough. You don’t look in your neighbour’s bowl to see if you have as much as them.” Everybody’s journey to success is different. Don’t compare yourself to others and force results. You can look at them for inspiration and strive to improve, but if you don’t, you’ll only get stressed and frustrated.

Not taking care of yourself
Taking time away from your work to relax is a form of destressing. Many big stars who are successful understands this point and you should too, make it a habit to take care of yourself, by exercising and eating healthy to avoid burnouts. Spend some time doing something you enjoy, it could be sitting down to enjoy a book, spending some time with your loved ones or baking some cookies for yourself.

Not learning to prioritise
Many people’s biggest weakness and enemy: procrastination. Try to start your day by creating a list of things you want to accomplish today. By looking at smaller tasks instead of a big picture, you’ll find that it’s easier to get things done. It’s human nature to give in to procrastination when your mentality is focused on a bigger result and image. Minimize distractions that usually keep you away from your work. You’ll survive without the few hours of not checking your Facebook feed!

Not learning from your mistakes
This is a sure way in preventing you from improving yourself. The inability of getting out of your comfort zone leads you to keep going back, repeating history and remain at where you are from the start. It’s not wrong to make mistakes, we’re all humans after all. But learning from your mistakes will get you to overcome challenges and surely it’ll help you to be more successful.

Keeping quiet and not asking questions
One way to learn new things is definitely by asking more questions. Being curious is not a bad thing and by asking more, you’ll learn more. The knowledge you gained is surely going to help you to be better, so don’t stay silent and keep to yourself as you’ll only stop learning!

Spending everyday indoors
Though its good to have some ‘me’ time, spending some time outside, be it outside your house or travelling overseas is beneficial for you too. Studies have shown that the outdoor provides you with various health and mental benefits which would help you to destress, focus better and stay healthier and happier. It’ll also train your confidence and capabilities in communicating and interacting with people.

Never willing to do more than necessary
Having initiative and taking charge is what keeps many successful people standing out from others. If you’re always lazy, never wanting to do more or have a can’t-do attitude, you’ll psycho yourself into thinking that the goal is unachievable.

Not having discipline
Self-discipline builds up strength, patience and a positive attitude and will help you in the long run. Many people want quick results but do not want to spend time during the process. Instead, they stay away from it due to the lack of discipline that they possess. Training yourself to have discipline would require you to work harder but believe me (if not, believe all the successful people that you envy), hard work will pay off and you’ll soon see satisfying results.

Do you possess any of these bad habits? Time for you to think twice and change for the better!
