We all know and love Fast and Furious. You don’t have to pretend to be some haughty classy film buff and claim that it’s just yet another action movie series. We know you secretly loved it. The ridiculousness is just part of the charm, and part of what made the franchise into the definitive Action Movie.

Now, no. 8 in the series is arriving in theatres fast, and we have here 10 fast (but not that furious) facts for you.

1. Name of the Film

The 8th film in the franchise, following the regular naming scheme of the series since 2 Fast 2 Furious, Fast & Furious (no. 4), Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, is The Fate of the Furious.

Nobody in this entire franchise likes normal naming schemes, eh.

Looking at the name for the latest film, it seems the director seriously missed out on an opportunity there. The Fate of the Furious, and not The F8 of the Furious? #justsaying

2. Storyline

The Fate of the Furious trailers have hinted at Dom (Vin Diesel) turning against his family. According to the official synopsis, Dom had been seduced in some way by the main antagonist, a brilliant hacker going by the name of Cipher, to turn to a life of crime.

As Dom and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) had been on their honeymoon, and the rest of the family enjoying some respite in their relatively normal lives, this came as a huge shock. The movie follows the family (with some surprising new members) going after Dom and trying to figure out what exactly was going on.

I’m not going to spoil the story for you (well, actually, I can’t, since I haven’t watched it).

3. New Cast Members

The already star-studded cast is getting expanded. Big names like Charlize Theron (of Mad Max: Fury Road fame), Scott Eastwood (son of Clint Eastwood), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones) and Helen Mirren are joining in. More familiar names like Jason Statham, Kurt Russell and Nathalie Emmanuel are reprising their roles as Deckard Shaw, Mr Nobody and Ramsey respectively.

4. Feud Between Actors

In a curious coincidence, the actors for the main characters had a beef with each other in real life. Last year during filming, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reportedly had some personal issues with Vin Diesel, mirroring what seems to be the main conflict of the film.

The Rock had posted a scathing Instagram post pointing fingers at certain male cast members, and Vin Diesel had confronted him about it. As of now, it seems there are some residual tensions as both actors are kept away from each other as much as possible during the film’s press tour.

5. Paul Walker

Due to the unfortunate passing of actor Paul Walker, Furious 7’s ending was rewritten to write his character, Brian, from the story. Originally, Furious 7 was to be the beginning of a new trilogy, but it had to be changed.

In remembrance of Paul Walker, The Fate of the Furious is said to contain more street racing loyal to the original Fast & Furious, honouring his wishes. More cars, yay!

6. Main Villain

The main antagonist is Cipher, a hacker played by actress Charlize Theron. She’s also the first female main antagonist of the series.

From the trailers, it seems she had somehow seduced Dom to a life of crime, and even shared a kiss. It is certainly quite intriguing how all this played out, as the last time we saw Dom, he was going on honeymoon with Letty.

7. Shaw

As previously mentioned, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) will be returning in The Fate of the Furious. What’s surprising, however, is that he seems to be returning on the side of Hobbs (The Rock) and the family. In the trailer, Shaw was being broken out of prison along with Hobbs, and the both of them (along with the family) were tasked with tracking Dom down and finding out what happened.

8. Ridiculous Cars

In true Fast and Furious fashion, the film with be using (and probably trashing) multiple ridiculously expensive cars.

In a Facebook live video last year June, the film’s vehicle coordinator introduced a portion of the ridiculously expensive cars that the film will be using.

  • 1929 Ford Rat Rod
  • McLaren 675LT
  • Speedkore Kuda
  • Twin Turbo Lamborghini
  • Ferrari F430
  • Rolls-Royce Wraith
  • 1956 Chevy Bel-Air
  • Nissan IDx

These cars total USD$17m, and aren’t the only vehicles used. Thank God they don’t need COE there, eh?

9. Filming Locations

Together with the crazy cars, the films have also been known for their crazy locations, from London to Dubai to Brazil. This time, three locations for filming immediately jumped out.

The cast and crew went to New York City, Cuba, and Iceland. Expect great views of the amazing Big Apple, and many picturesque locales within Cuba and Iceland, before they inevitably get shot up or blown up by the family. You know that’s going to happen. You’ve watched the 7 films that came before.

10. New Trilogy

For fans of the series, no need to worry about the series ending just like that. According to Vin Diesel himself, The Fate of the Furious kicks off one final trilogy for the saga, ending on no. 10 coming 2021. So not really good news then, since you now know when exactly it’s all going to end.

On the bright side, at least there are three more films to look forward to!
