It’s 2017. Time to Throw These 10 Things Away from Your Life

Now that 2016 has passed, I’m sure many of us have collected fond memories that are worth reminiscing. Sure, they are a big takeaway from 2016, but as we move on to 2017, we do tend to bring along certain things that should be left in 2016.

Yes, it’s time to rid of these things as you embrace a new beginning in 2017. New year, new you, yeah?

1. Mindset

As we embark on a new year, many of us tend to set certain resolutions for ourselves to work towards. Yet, we still hold onto old mindsets, hoping that we’ll still be able to achieve our goals. You know the rest of the story from here- resolution abandoned within 2-3 weeks, and you are left feeling dejected and guilty that another year is here and once again, plans were not followed through. Indeed, making changes is difficult and it is so much easier to remain constant. But if we do not have a change of mindset, we tend to lose our motivation pretty fast. The same old mindset will not apply in helping you to achieve your yearly plans.

After all, like what Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

2. Unused Gifts

Remember those unused gifts or old hand-me-downs that you’re guilt-tripped into keeping? We all have experienced this before; our friends or relatives giving us a birthday gift out of courtesy, and we accepted it out of respect. You’ve done your civic duty and kept it around, but you haven’t used it… in a year. I think it’s time for the guilt gifts to go.

3. Relationships

Hear me out, it brings more pain to hold onto a relationship that doesn’t bring you any joy. Yes, it is difficult to move on from your past relationships that have played a major part in your life. However, holding on will deter you from moving forward, and you will only end up living in the past. Take this time to let go of any toxic relationships that have dragged you down, and embrace the ones who have made you into a better person in 2017.

4. Old Prescriptions

Take the new year as an opportunity to clean your medicine cabinet if you haven’t! Get rid of prescriptions and over-the-counter pills that have expired or that you haven’t used in months, since it’s also unsafe to keep expired medicine around.

5. Old Magazines

If they’re over a year old, they’ve got to go. Every last one of them. We just have to admit it to ourselves that we are never going to re-read them. Unless it’s your favourite idol or model on the front cover of the magazine, of course. Feel free to keep them!

6. Old Bills and Receipts

If you paid ’em, toss ’em, unless you need to keep them for tax purposes. Alternatively, scan important documents and keep a softcopy on an external hard drive for future reference.

7. Old Clothes

Time for a wardrobe makeover! Clear out all old clothes that are worn out, those you hardly even wear and those that you have outgrown them. By saying getting rid of them, I mean recycling, selling, donating, or — as the last resort — trashing. You’ll be surprised it isn’t true when we say that we ran out of clothes to wear, since only half of our wardrobe (or 1/4) contains clothes that we actually wear regularly.

8. Old Makeup products

I’m sure that many females out that have pretty extensive makeup products will have their favourite liquid eyeliner that they have been using for a long time. However, it is known that no matter how “long-lasting” the makeup is, it still has its expiry date. So do remember to check your makeup products and rid those that have been used for a long, long time. It reduces the risk of an eye infection, not a really pretty sight if you ask me.

9. Bad Habits

The constant leg shaking and nails biting? Yeap, those bad habits have to go. However, you don’t just eliminate a bad habit- you replace it. Choose a substitute to relief your stress instead of biting your nails. Over time, it will be easier to replace them!

10. Old Calendars

Last but not least, it is time to rid of old planners and calendars to signify the start of a new year.
