Are you a fresh graduate who is worrying about how to land your first job amidst the COVID-19 situation? Fret no more, my fellow graduates. Remember the Fortitude Budget, announced by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on 26 May (Tuesday)? In response to fresh graduates having uncertainty in their search for jobs, he mentioned that there will be traineeships starting in June. And guess what? Today's date is 1 June, which means... Fresh Grads Can Now Apply for Traineeships Programme That Pays an Allowance of Up to $2,500 a Month Starting from Monday (1 June), graduates will be able to apply for traineeships under SGUnited Traineeships Programme. Image: Facebook (Josephine Teo) Manpower Minister Josephine Teo posted on Facebook yesterday (31 May) that this programme is tuned to help recent graduates start their careers on a "good footing". While COVID-19 might have resulted in uncertainty for graduates, this programme helps to give a "firmer foothold" in the job market once the economy recovers. The programme will aid graduates to acquire valuable industry-relevant experience, develop skills, and expand their professional networks. There will be a total of up to 21,000 traineeship opportunities. As a graduate, you can look forward to traineeships across familiar industries ranging from Marketing, Finance, to more niche ones such as Social Work. There are also a handful of traineeships in areas such as Security Penetration Testing and Operational Risk Analysis, which are good headstarts for the future economy. Furthermore, to create traineeship with clear development plans, they will be working closely with interested host organisations. These traineeships will be approved by Singapore Business Federation (SBF), who is a partner for this programme. Organisations Stepping Forward To Offer Traineeships So far, there have been over 1,000 organisations stepping forward to offer over 11,000 traineeships. Majority of them are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), such as Carousell, Yang Kee Logistics, Spic & Span and SGAG Media. It's heartening to see young organisations willing to give a hand and nurture our fresh grads. On the other hand, there are also large companies such as UOB and Singtel that are eager to help young graduates gain experiences as well. In addition, the Public Service will also be offering traineeship opportunities, together with Institutes of Higher Learning such as our local Universities. Not to mention, they will be having a Virtual Career Fair later in June. This is to make it easier for graduating students to search for traineeships that suit them. So if you're a fresh graduate like me who has no idea what you want to do with your life, you can always attend the Career Fair to find out more. Mrs Teo added in her post that she encourages graduating to students to make full use of these opportunities to build networks, skills and resumes. While this traineeship isn't the same as landing a permanent job, it will definitely help graduates to sustain till the economy recovers after the crisis ends. She ends her post with a quote, saying "with grit and a little help from one another, we can and will weather whatever storms come our way." Take it from her; while times are tough for everyone regardless if you're a business owner or a fresh grad, helping each other out is the best way forward to survive this crisis together.
