There are few things in the food industry that belongs together like Fann Wong and Christopher Lee.

Milo powder and Maggi Curry, that’s one. And fried wanton with Mayo.

But none.

None.

None top chocolate and banana. Even their first letter, CB, shows that they belong side by side.

And who are we to argue with that?

So when Ah Mah told us they got a piping hot banana chocolate cake in all its glorious jiggly self and asked if we wanted to try it?

The war in the office was legendary.

And naturally, I won.

They say that beauty lies in the heart of the beholder. But let’s face it; nobody ever wants to eat cockroaches.

As such, the first impression, no matter what anyone says, is very important.

And suffice it to say that Ah Mah, in that aspect, just about topped the list.

Fragrant, aesthetic and gigantic, the cake’s aroma just wafted out of the box the moment you open it up.

“But hey, you got to look at the side view too!” Boon Hun exclaimed.

With that in mind, we took off a piece of clothing (wrapping)…

And the aesthetic level arguably burst level 9000.

Okay, not really, but just look at that oozy chocolate filling, all gooey and shit, and just tempting you to sink your dirty teeth into its soft, vulnerable texture.

Like I said, jiggly. Ah Mah castella cakes are known to be jiggly, and this isn’t any different. That, my dear ladies and gentlemen, is pure perfection.

Light fluffy banana cake with oozy chocolate filling… you want the answer to life? That’s the answer to life.

THAT CHOCOLATE.

But let’s all calm down because the next part is even more important. I’m talking, of course, about the…

Taste

Our local videographer, Justin Tan, is pretty famous in the office for having a delectable taste.

But by the time he’s done a slice of Ah Ma’s Chocolate Banana cake, his usually stoic, blank expression has morphed into that of extreme joy.

Knocking the videographer aside, I grabbed the knife, stabbed the cake with it and relentlessly drew myself a nice, big slice.

Bite.

Chew.

Heaven.

The last time I felt this way was when I was having Jia Yuen Eating House’s Salted Egg Buttermilk Chicken Rice, and we all know how that turned out.

How can something taste this good?

First off, let’s start with the texture. It’s light and fluffy, as all Castella cakes are, except this time, it’s not boring ole egg but the banana aroma that fills your mouth instead.

The whole piece practically melts in your mouth.

And the best part? It’s not too sweet either and is balanced really well in terms of taste.

For those who are wondering if what banana cake to compare this to, it’s on the level of Hiap Joo’s banana cake in JB.

Except, Ah Mah’s version has chocolate so it wins by default.

Currently, it’s selling at all Ah Mah outlets in Singapore for $11 per cake. And we’d recommend you to try it at least once.

Because this? This is worth it for the price. This could just be the one to revive the queues at Ah Mah’s outlets again.
