There have been new revelations in the umbrella lady saga, and this time, it relates why the man has insisted on getting into the office of the workshop, and why the mechanics were stopping him.

If you’ve forgotten how the scuffle escalated after the umbrella lady’s fluent Hokkien expletives, here’s the video again. The man in blue, known as Mr Lai, was walking into the office when a mechanic tried to stop him.

While it has been established that there was bad blood between the two companies prior to this incident, it appears that the parking dispute was not the only catalyst in this viral video that has everyone talking.

In an interview with 新明日报 , Mr Lai, the director of the insurance company as well, disclosed that the workshop involved, Fix It Auto, comprised three shareholders, namely him and another two shareholders. Shareholders are essentially people who own the company, but might or might not be involved in its daily operations. They could, however, vote on who to be the director of the company.

Mr Lai then became the director of Fix It Auto when the accounts of the workshop were found to contain discrepancies. A director of a company is the highest-ranking officer in the company, making decisions on the daily operations and holding accountability for the company’s actions. There could be more than one director in a company and a director, however, could be just an employee and not a shareholder.

According to Mr Lai, he was often stopped from checking the accounts by the other two shareholders. This month, he was issued a lawyer’s letter that requested him not to enter the workshop when the two shareholders were not around, which could explain why the mechanic was stopping him from walking into the office.

Apparently, according to someone from Fix It Auto, Mr Lai’s brother has ostensibly opened another workshop nearby which the other two shareholders were not aware of initially. When they knew, they wanted Mr Lai to sell his shares of Fix It Auto, but that did not happen. Mr Lai, in January, then advertised his brother’s workshop in front of his insurance company.

On the day of the scuffle, Mr Lai has walked in with the intention to check the accounts.

Here’s one takeaway that many have missed: focus on this guy.

Watch the video again and you’ll see that he’s doing his best to stop all the fights, even discarding his coffee in the process.

In the midst of looking for who’s wrong, or the identity of the umbrella lady, maybe we should also thank this unsung hero instead?
