For those planning on to hire an Indonesian maid or renewing a contract next month, listen up.
You will have to pay an extra $70 to an insurer for a new performance bond of $6000, a new scheme of sorts that is implemented by the Indonesian Embassy.
So, let’s say you break the terms of the employment contract such as abusing your maid, you will have to fork out $6000.
The insurance company will pay the embassy first and then they will claim the money from you.
The contract is currently being reviewed and will be finalised by 1 Feb.
The current contract terms include buying personal accident insurance for the helper, allowing her to practise her religion and stopping her from cleaning the exterior of windows in high-rise homes.
Personally, I think it’s a good way to protect the domestic workers since 60% of domestic workers are being exploited.
A spokesman for the Indonesian Embassy mentioned that the bond is to better protect Indonesian migrant workers here by ensuring employers abide by the contracts.
With about 120,000 Indonesian maids working in Singapore, this is a step in the right direction.
The spokesperson believes that this new bond won’t impede the hiring of Indonesian maids.
Beatrice Mitschke, a 47-year-old housewife who is planning to hire a new maid later this year said in an interview: “Extra cost is never welcome to employers.”
So if this new bond is finalised, employers will have to pay more since they already have to buy insurance for the $5000 security bond, part of MOM’s requirements when employing a foreign worker.
At the end of the day, if you’re a responsible employer, you won’t have to worry about breaking the contract and not to mention that the new insurance isn’t super expensive.
