If you are a working adult now, do you remember the first few years when you have just started work? Do you remember how tough it was to transit from college to the working life?

Everything seems to be the exact opposite of what you have thought it to be, isn’t it? We have struggled and suffered through the processes, so we decided that we should share the struggles with those who are coming out to the real world to work.

What are some of the honest truths that you need to learn before you start working? Read on to find out.

You are NOT going to find your dream job the moment you step into the working world
This is the number one important truth that you need to remember by heart. Yes, you have studied all the correct degrees (you think) and you have been working hard at the company which you interned with but trust us, you will not get your dream job the moment you step into the society.

The world is made up of many false expectations, and you need to remember that having all the right degrees without the right experience will not get you the dream job you want. Start slow and build it up.

You are NOT going to get the fat salary you want
As a fresh graduate, you are not going to get a fat salary. More often than not, you are going to be disappointed at how small the package is going to be. Do not be discouraged. It will only get better year by year.

You will NOT get what you want out of life served to you on a silver plate
You will need to work hard for what you want out of life. There is no butler in the real world serving you what you want out of life on a silver plate. Regardless of what you are after in this life, you have to work for it, fight for it and achieve it through pure hard work. There are no shortcuts in this world.

You will NOT get spoon-fed in your job
If you are expecting to be spoon-fed in your first job the way you are while you are a kiddo, you are seriously wrong! There will be nobody in the real world who will give you a second look if you do not know what to do. You are supposed to know. The only time that someone is going to teach you is the first week when you enter the company and say “hi” to them for the first time. So remember, you got to know your stuff or else.

You CANNOT please everyone you meet in the real world
This is actually a universal truth which we think you should know by now. If you don’t, it is time to know. You cannot please everyone you meet. If you please your boss, you are likely to be pissing off your colleagues. If you please your colleagues, you are likely pissing off another team in the department.

And should you please all your colleagues, your boss is likely to be unhappy with you. So be your own person, set your own principles and stick by them. You will not go too wrong if you are upright, honest and do not take shortcuts.

You WILL be criticised
Remember this–you are be criticised for almost everything you do. There will always be someone who doesn’t like something you do. Simlar to how you cannot please everyone, the person who is not pleased with you will criticise you. It could be conductive feedback or it could be vicious backstabbing. Be aware that this is common in the working world and vicious backstabbing can have long-lasting negative effects.

It could be a constructive feedback or it could be vicious backstabbing. Be aware that this is common in the working world and vicious backstabbing can have long-lasting negative effects on you. So bite back.

You WILL find that the real world sucks
The real world is not what you have fantasised about. It is not a place where everyone is nice and friendly. There are nasty people out there and they will get you because you are a new entrant to the real world. Be prepared to be bullied.

You are NOT ready for anything that comes your way
Do not be alarmed when you find that you have not ready for what comes your way. You are supposed to feel this way because what we learned in school is far from what the reality is. Be humble, learn as much as you can and you will be alright.

You MIGHT feel completely stuck in a job you do not like
Finding the first job is not easy, and landing one that you will like is harder. There is a possibility that you will find a job that you do not really like but there are no other suitable jobs to move on to. You might feel completely stuck as if there is nothing better for you out there. This is also a common feeling on the ground. The only advice we can give you is to find a job that is as close to what you want to do as possible. Accumulate experiences that will help you land the dream job.

Dating BECOMES non-existent
With work claiming your life from 9am–6pm and overtime from 6pm-8pm, you might find your social life going into shambles. What is worse is the lack of eligible singles whom you can date. You can literally kiss your social life away.

\Find time to meet friends and ask them to invite their friends along. Who knows who you will meet! Try not to use social dating apps as there are predators in there who will do anything to lure you into their traps.

There you have it, the top 10 things you need to know before you start work. Hope it helps you adjust better to the working world.
