Music has always been a supportive and cheerful companion during either our highs or lows. While we’ve grown and matured through the years, these songs will be celebrating their 20th birthday this year!Â
Even the walkman has evolved into the mp3 player and now, the iPod. Some of us already have all our music right in the comfort of our smartphones.Â
Yet, these songs remain a nostalgic reminder of the good and bad times we’ve had when listening to them.Â
1. Aqua – Barbie GirlÂ
This catchy tune featuring one of the biggest franchises in the toy industry had caught the crowd’s attention back in 1997 and many can still sing to its lyrics today. Barbie and Ken spearheaded the many lines of dolls, female and male ones respectively, and the mention of them brings to mind this song as well. Though it’s based on an innocent brand of dolls, the lyrics itself are less so. Listen to the song closely, and maybe you’ll find the innuendo to less PG rated situations.Â
2. Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go OnÂ
Ever since Titanic, there hasn’t been another song more synonymous with romantic tragedy. Celine Dion’s vocals will never be forgotten as she delivered a melodious yet mournful song while a ship on its virgin voyage sunk and brought a newfound couple down with it. We’ll always remember the sorrow hidden within the notes as Jack and Rose stood at the helm of the ship but met their demise later on in the film.Â
3. Sixpence None The Richer – Kiss Me (She’s All That)Â
Carefree and sweet, this love song depicts a couple lounging under a starry night and among the bright greenery. Leigh Nash, the lead singer, delivered a succinct image of a young couple in their honeymoon stage and enjoying each other’s presence fully. Her gentle voice is quite a contrast to today’s high notes and sped up beats, and remains a well-known love song today.Â
4. R.Kelly – I Believe I Can FlyÂ
Occasionally, we’ll still hear this song played when an event is a success, or at sports award ceremony. It’s for good reason; the song is still an inspiration for its powerful lyrics. What’s more, this song topped the charts in the 90s, in a period of time where black Americans still faced discrimination, giving them a sense of pride. It then spread all over the world, and anyone could feel inspired by it. Next time you hear this song, just believe.Â
5. Natalie Imbruglia – TornÂ
Your typical summertime song is upbeat with techno beats aplenty, but this song shows how you can sing about teen romance and still sound good. The sweet voice laments about how two people seemed close but never did grow into a couple, and listeners will sigh as they reminiscence their lost loves. Take a trip back memory lane and listen to the song in 2017!Â
6. Puff Daddy – I’ll Be Missing YouÂ
Rather than posing as a romantic song with upbeat rap music for a lover, this song was a tribute to a lost friend. P Diddy’s (as he is known now) friend had his life taken by a gunman, who was never taken to court. Through his rap and singing, he was able to find closure in the death of a loved one. Today some use this song to honour a family member or friend that has passed away, but regardless of how saddening the song is, it is remembered among fans.Â
7. ‘N Sync – Tearin’ Up My HeartÂ
Ah, unrequited love. Among all the love songs in the 90s, this was one of the most famous ones because of how relatable it was. ‘N Sync was considered a true talent in the music industry, with Justin Timberlake still doing well these days. If you want to check out how older boy bands were like, take a moment to listen to this bittersweet song.Â
8. Spice Girls – WannabeÂ
Tired of modern girl groups with their repetitive tunes and heavily edited vocals? Take a step back and listen to the Spice Girls! With lyrics about valuing friendship over love, its catchy tune has caught the attention of many over the years. Moreover, their music video depicted how spunky and fun life could be in the past, which is a pleasure to view at any time.Â
9. Backstreet Boys – Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)Â
Backstreet Boys was a household name back in the 90s and this song is similar to today’s party songs, with how upbeat it is. If you take a look at their music video, you’d be amazed at how much effort was put into making it; the cast and band are dressed in Halloween and gothic themed clothing, the setting being an old haunted castle. The swarm of dancers grooving to the beat in their intricately designed costumed it sure to amaze you!Â
10. Backstreet Boys – As Long As You Love MeÂ
Another Backstreet Boys song that was vastly popular back then was, in fact, one of their signature songs. It hit the top 5 in various countries and is remembered as a sweet love song that is easy on the ears. The dedication of a lover shown in the lyrics is certain to keep listeners coming back to this romantic song.Â
Though not all of us were present to hear these songs make their debut, they still feature in movies or advertisements every once in awhile and we latch onto the tune and tap to the beat.Â
While pop songs these days are vastly different, hopefully, we will remember how songs have changed and enjoyed every step they take in their evolution.
