Coffee drinkers, I am sure you would have heard about the MyCafe debacle that has been circulating around social media.

But what seemed like a hoax turned out to be real, very real indeed.

Here are 10 facts about the MYCafe incident that has led to a recall in Singapore.

1) MYCafe’s Durian Coffee

The coffee in question is the instant durian coffee by MYCafe.

2) 5 people were hospitalised

After consuming the said durian coffee, five people in Penang were admitted to Hospital Pulau Pinang, Channel NewsAsia reported.

According to the Penang Health Department, the five people were admitted in between 27 Jan and 30 Jan.

Three have been discharged while two of them are still receiving treatment.

3) Two of the five victims were Nepalese security guards

Video of them in the hospital has gone viral.

One of the security guards, Sapkota Mangal Prasad said: “I became nauseous, had a headache and my body became very hot less than five minutes after drinking the coffee.”

“I was also convulsing as if I was having a fit before I lost consciousness and only regained consciousness when treated at the Penang Hospital,” he added.

4) Singapore recalls Coffee Tree MyCafe 4-in-1 Penang Durian White Coffee

Following the aforementioned reports, AVA has instructed a recall of the product as a “precautionary measure”.

Arising from reports of consumers in Malaysia being hospitalised after drinking Coffee Tree MyCafe “4-in-1 Penang Durian White Coffee”, AVA has followed up with our counterparts in Malaysia to request for facts of the case.

While the case is under investigation, AVA has instructed a recall of Coffee Tree MyCafe “4-in-1 Penang Durian White Coffee” from Malaysia as a precautionary measure. Consumers who have purchased the product can return them to the retailer. AVA will be taking samples for food safety tests.

Consumers who do not feel well after consuming any food products should seek medical attention. As a good food safety practice, when in doubt of the safety of a food product, do not consume.

6) They defended their products

Employees from the company told The Star that it complies with the health and food safety requirement and has received the necessary certification.

One of the employees said: “Our board members and staff are confident that our products, including the coffee, are suitable for all.”

7) The product might have been tampered.

A day after they defended their product, there was a revelation.

According to Mycafe, the coffee packaging was tampered.

They shared a picture of their original product and a packet taken from the victim.

The former weighed 42g and the latter weighed 54g.

The company has since filed a police report and mentioned that they will be giving their full cooperation to the investigations.

8) 2 more people hospitalised

Two garbage truck drivers were admitted to the Penang Hospital yesterday after drinking the same coffee as the other 5 victims.

After 10 minutes of consumption, they felt dizzy and vomited.

9) What should you do

If you happen to have the said durian coffee in your homes, please dispose it or return it to their respective stores.

10) Thoughts

As of writing time, they have not identified the exact “drug” in the coffee. For now, ditch the durian coffee, just to be safe.
