As Singaporeans, we love the drive and intensity that comes with being a citizen of the country.
All of us have a built-in chip of sorts that want to strive for excellence. It’s also probably why we are secretly proud of being called kiasu and sometimes borderline OCD.
As a country, we are now looking into becoming a smart nation. But what does it truly mean? You’re about to finally find out!
1. A Short Brief
Smart Nation refers to people who are EMPOWERED by technology, so much so that it is used to make our lives a fulfilling and meaningful one.
The community is more closely knit thanks to the possibility of using the capacity of networks, info-comm tech and data too.
2. Contactless Fare Payment
Consider this – having a contactless mode of fare payments when you’re using public transport to make things SO MUCH easier. All you need is your gadget, and you’re in!
3. Heading the Research for Self-Driving Vehicles (SDVs)
Singapore is spearheading the research for SDVs by providing a space to test them out before they’re let onto the roads.
SDVs are expected to support efficient transport needs especially when there are existential constraints.
4. Smart Homes
This includes an Elderly Monitoring System which gives caregivers the peace of knowing their loved ones are alright, and also a Utility Management System which will help you keep an eye on your utility usage around the house.
5. Environment Monitoring
An app will allow us to monitor our surroundings at any time. You will soon be able to report any environmental issue you notice, as well as have access to some pretty useful real-time data.
The app is called OneService, by the way! Give feedback on construction sites, pests, roads and footpaths and even your drinking water.
6. Digital Healthcare
The HealthHub portal and mobile app was launched in January last year and is a healthcare companion at your fingertips.
Get the information, tools and services you need to keep yourself in optimum wellness and health.
You’ll have an inexhaustible directory on healthcare facilities on the island. Want to know where to go and work out? Check this app out.
7. The National Steps Challenge
The Health Promotion Board (HPB) kick-started a nationwide physical activity program – they want you to move your butt from the chair and be more mobile.
You need to register for this and get a Steps Tracker. When you receive it, pair the device with Health 365 (a mobile app), and start cracking while you track your steps every day.
And you can win mini prizes like vouchers for milestones gained.
8. Digital Government
Come on, you saw this coming right? E-services takes centre stage here, making it so much easier and seamless for you to get in touch with the government.
9. Cashless Society, Contactless Payment
We’ve been moving pretty rapidly to becoming a cashless country. This couldn’t have become possible if it weren’t for digital wallets, contactless payment cards, Apple Pay and yes, even tech you wear!
10. Assistive Technology
To help the elderly and disabled community in Singapore, developments are being looked into when it comes to robotics and assistive technology.
The real difference can be truly seen when this particular segment reaches a point where it can help the elderly and needy in completing activities and tasks.
For instance, there would be delivery drones to send equipment and meds, and robotics tech to improve a patient’s mobility to reduce the chances of bed sores.
Really, really good stuff ah…!
