Just a few days back (30 Oct), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong made an amazing announcement. Marina Bay’s floating platform was going to be revamped for a better purpose: It is going to be transformed into a permanent fixture to pay tribute to the nation’s National Servicemen (NS).
In case you are still in the dark about the transformation, here are 10 things you’d want to know – whether you’re a NSman or not!
A Bigger Seating Capacity
The platform’s going to be larger and more accessible at the same time. To top it all off, more seating capacity for well, more of us Singaporeans to come and join in the NS parade.
But It’s Already the Largest Of Its Kind As It Is
Yes, the Float is the biggest floating stage in the world!
There Will Be A Gallery
Sure, what better way to pay our respect to the NSmen, both from the past and the current batches than gallery which shows the journey of Singapore’s National Service and the contributions from its servicemen!
Where Will the Gallery Be Located?
Even the place the gallery is at has been thoughtfully planned – it will be just below the grandstand, where all things of pride to the nation and National Service happen.
The Name Will Change Too
The Float@Marina Bay will be renamed none other than NS Square. Nothing to do with parade square, I think, ‘coz my colleagues said you can’t walk on a parade square. You have to march or run #dunnorealornot
A Multifunctional Platform
When its facelift is done, the floating platform not only be used for NS parades, but for myriad of other things like weekend markets, and arts and cultural performances too. Oh, new pasar malams!?
Why the Tribute Is Well-Deserved
It isn’t always said out loud, but the National Servicemen have played pivotal role in ensuring Singapore is kept safe from harm, especially the likes of unsavoury threats.
Why Now?
National Servicemen have kept the country in peace for decades, and when we say decades, it’s actually 50 years already. About time we gave them a solid and in this case, a beautiful structure to remember them by, always! NS50 has been pretty good for NSmen so far, eh?
But Why Marina Bay of All Places?
Well, for one, it’s one of the most well-regarded places in the country. The permanence of the floating platform as a sign of NS in the country is befitting too, don’t you think?
One Thing Still Stays Though
The brand-new NS Square, when it’s completed, will still be the location for its member’s military training parades for their graduation, like the famous POP parade.
Well, National Servicemen, you have given your best for Singapore, and it’s high time we did something to remember you by.
When the revamp is completed, we are pretty sure that a whole huge number of people will flock over to see the place, and also learn more about the things you have done for all of us.
