Say what you will about old movies and their effects, but they’re classics.
Old is gold and whatnot, right?
While the young crowd has their marvel movies, and aunties today Korean dramas, the movies that really clicked for us 90s kids were Hong Kong movies.
The action, the drama, the story plot; they practically define our childhood. Whether it be action packed blockbusters or hilarious CNY comedies.
Let’s take a walk down memory lane and look at the 10 HK movies that still kick ass after so many years.
1. Infernal Affairs 無間道
Any 90’s kid, or at least the boys, will be able to tell you what 無間道 is. An HK movie based on undercover cops filled with action, what else do you need? And let’s not forget the iconic lines: “I am a cop.” “Who knows?”
2. Project A 盜海奇兵
Nobody, and I mean nobody, makes better action comedy than Jackie Chan. My first experience with his movie was Project A, which consist of him, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao duking it out on screen.
3. The Killer 喋血双雄
Another great Hong Kong actor we all love is Chow Yun Fat; remember this movie? It was guns blazing, action packed and sentimental at the same time.
4. Once Upon a Time in China 2 黃飛鴻
Actually, we love anything 黃飛鴻. What’s not to like? Martial arts, 13th aunt, and of course, the epic Shadowless Kick. Bet you didn’t know Donnie Yen was in this 1992 film, did you?
5. Fist of Legend 精武英雄
Before there were Ip Man and his challenge to fight 10 Japanese fighters at once, we have Chen Zhen (Jet Li) and his dojo thrashing. Seriously, who could forget Jet Li’s aim-for-the-crotch mentality? Ouch.
6. A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora’s Box 西遊記:月光寶盒
That was my first brush with Only You.
And who could forget the monk who can talk someone into committing suicide? Not me.
A parody of Journey to the West, this is one that everyone loves; unlike the Netflix version that’s coming up soon.
7. Kung Fu Hustle 功夫
Okay, this isn’t exactly old but it’s too good not to add in. Filled with action and comedic moments, this is one you will watch over and over again.
8. Police Story 2 警察故事II
Ask anyone what they remembered about Jackie Chan, and most will probably tell you, Police Story. While I’ve watched the entire series, I’ve got to admit that my personal favourite is the second one where his enemy was released from prison because he has a terminal illness.
You’ll never get sick of watching how he rescue his girlfriend over and over again.
9. God of Gamblers 賭神
This was the Hong Kong movie that took the world by storm. With Chow Yun-Fat, an immersive storyline and amazing filmography, gambling has never looked so amazing.
How many times have you imagined walking into the room like that before? All the time, i tell you.
10. Fight Back To School 逃学威龙
Again, another movie with going undercover as the main theme of the story. Stephen Chow managed to blend action and comedy into a seamless movie that ends happily; with him getting the girl, arresting the bad guys and generally having a fun and awesome ride through the show.
