10 Makan Places in Choa Chu Kang That Are Worth the Calories

If Choa Chu Kang was an actual setting in Hunger Games, it would be called District 23.

And no I didn’t make it up, because apparently that’s what property agents refer to Choa Chu Kang as.

But seeing how there’s no district 23 in Jennifer Lawrence’s movie bow-hicle, I would say that if you want an inkling of which district CCK is most similar to… it would be District 13.

Why? Because both are presumed to have “disappeared” off the face of the map (or in CCK’s case, underrated) but ARE actually brimming with life, activity and better food than the rest of Singapore (yes I just said that).

But before you blast me off the face of this Earth, let me just take you through the 10 Best Makan Places in CCK.

You can always slap me after that.

1. Bak Chor Mee @ CCK 302 Foodhouse

Image: Entree Kibbles

Located literally a stone’s throw away from the CCK Bus Interchange (you can test it out if you want; just don’t hit any of the cai png dudes cos that’s my favourite stall), this foodhouse operates 24 hours and hosts a number of noteworthy stalls, one of which happens to be the Fishball Noodle stall.

How do I describe it… you know the phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’? Yeah, that’s it.

On the surface, it’s nothing but a quaint, humid little stall operated by cute, lovely aunties who work tirelessly amidst the aforementioned humidity.

But once you get the end product, damn…

The book (or food in this case) is actually filthy rich in content.

The Bak Chor Mee, in particular, just screams ‘foodgasm’ with every bite.

For one, the mee pok noodles don’t taste overly doughy, as many fishball noodle stalls tend to make the mistake of. The minced meat portions were generous, and coats every bite with a meaty, succulent taste.

And of course, the soup complements the experience pretty well.

But if mince meat isn’t your thing, the fishball noodles are definitely worth a shot too. Springy fishballs just bounce off your tongue, making every bite a juicy, chewy one you’ll find yourself running out of before you even know it.

2. Rasa Istimewa C2K Restaurant

Image: Cheekiemonkies.com

While Rasa Istimewa C2K Restaurant isn’t exactly a stone’s throw away from the interchange, it’s arguably a javelin’s throw away.

And what a javelin I will throw to dine at Rasa.

For starters, its satay is absolutely delish. And it’s not because I’m craving for satay right now.

Rather, the meat was grilled to a T, didn’t come packed looking like a cancer status item and practically melts on your tongue when dipped in similarly appetising peanut sauce.

There’s also a wide variety of local fare (including seafood dishes) on offer here to cater to even the pickiest consumer, so your grumpy family of four is pretty safe.

Address: 26 Choa Chu Kang Dr, Choa Chu Kang Park, 689719
Hours: 12 pm to 12 am (Sun to Thur), 12 pm to 1 am (Fri & Sat)

3. BBQ Express

Despite violent objections from the rest of the office, I insisted on slotting BBQ Express into this list, and it’s not because I absolutely adore the honey-glazed teriyaki chicken there. Erm, not really.

Image: Yelp Singapore

Lest you’re unaware, BBQ Express is a small little outlet located at Lot One Shopping Mall’s basement floor, and it serves honey-glazed meat like teriyaki chicken, pork ribs and chicken wings.

They are also pretty unique in the sense that they offer omelette rice and pearl rice to go with your juicy meat pieces.

Price wise, it’s not exactly dirt cheap, but it ain’t Bread Street Kitchen either. So there’s no real need to worry about bursting your wallet unless you’re literally a certain red-headed wizard who studied in Hogwarts.

4. Ah Boy Chicken Rice

It’s easy to find chicken rice in Singapore, seeing how it’s such a staple in local food tradition.

It’s hard, however, to find good chicken rice in Singapore.

Thankfully, Choa Chu Kang residents are in for a treat as Ah Boy Chicken Rice lies right smack in the vicinity.

With flavourful chicken pieces that don’t taste like plastic (I’m looking at you generic coffee shop stalls) and rice that’s actually fragrant and not just reeking of chicken fat, the chicken rice here might not boast a Michelin star, but it certainly deserves the People’s Michelin star. To me anyway.

5. Fu Xiang Kitchen @ Lot One Food Junction

Image: Foursquare

When it first opened a couple of years back, people went crazy over it, with ludicrously long queues forming outside the stall and (irritatingly) obstructing the escalator.

Naturally, I was quite pissed with it (how dare you obstruct my holy way?), until I tried it for the first time. Then I remember thinking:

“Damn, they serve such good fare here in Food Junction?”

And indeed, I found myself going back there again and again. Incidentally, I especially liked their Emperor Cream Sauce Chicken. With just the right amount of creaminess, the deep fried chicken cubes emphatically melt in your mouth. Not a bad feeling, with all respects.

Other noteworthy dishes include their Cereal fish, Claypot sesame chicken and Fried butter sotong.

Address: Food Junction, Lot One, #04-15, Lot One, 21 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4, 689812
Hours: Open daily from 10 am to 10 pm

6. Yu Kee Duck Rice

Image: Yu Kee Duck Rice

Honestly, I’ve always had a distinct preference for chicken rice over duck rice. I mean, there’s more meat; often times it’s cheaper, and it’s more filling too.

The only perk of having duck rice is its yam rice, and even then it gets so jelak after a few bites that you’re better off with fat-filled chicken rice.

But then I encountered Yu Kee Duck Rice. And the rest, as they say, was history.

7. Ngoh Hiang Bee Hoon @ CCK 302 Foodhouse

On the 7th place of this list, we have yet another CCK 302 Foodhouse product: the Ngoh Hiang Bee Hoon stall.

With a wide variety of side dishes like tau kwa, meat rolls, sausages, fish balls and century eggs on offer, this stall is one place to satisfy all your bee hoon cravings.

8. Dian Xiao Er

Image: HungryGoWhere

Admittedly, Dian Xiao Er isn’t really the best place to go on a shoestring budget.

But then again, what’s a string when there’s a big fat duck to feast into?

For the Jon Snows of the F&B industry, Dian Xiao Er serves up a variety of meat delicacies, with its signature being the herbal roasted duck. And lest you’re unaware, I absolutely abhor herbs, as I do with any bitter stuff in general. But Dian Xiao Er’s herbal roasted duck?

It’s to die for.

Image: Dian Xiao Er

Crispy on the outside and juicy, unquestionably succulent on the inside, the roasted duck complements well with the herbs to create a dish I would definitely go back for again.

Incidentally, the scrambled egg with tomatoes is a delectable option too. In fact, I would actually rate it as the best I had so far in Singapore.

And yes, that includes my own mum’s.

Address: 21 Choa Chu Kang Ave 4, #B1-32/33 Lot One, 698812

Opening hours: 11.30 am – 3 pm / 5.30 pm – 10 pm (Mon to Fri), 11.30 am – 10 pm (Sat & Sun)

9. Siam Kitchen

Fancy Thai food in the vicinity? Well then, look no further than Siam Kitchen.

Image: eatigo.com

Based on the second level of Lot One Shopper’s Mall, Siam Kitchen offers Thai cuisine to satisfy the Thai-depraved people of Singapore, and what a good job it does at that.

With signature menu items like their Seafood Pad Thai, Siam Kitchen might not constitute your full Siam experience, but it can definitely give it a run for its money.

Address: 21 Choa Chu Kang Ave 4, #02-25 Lot One, 689812
Opening hours: 11.30 am to 9.30 pm daily

10. Cheng Gong Pang Xie Zi Jia

Craving for some good tze char in the heartlands? Cheng Gong Pang Xie Zi Jia’s got your back.

Image: Foursquare

Featuring old school tze char dishes like Chili Crab, Curry Fish Head and Sweet and sour pork at relatively affordable prices, Cheng Gong’s a good place to enjoy some hearty dishes over the weekends.

And did I mention that it serves up some jaw-droppingly good ginger onion fish?

Yumz.

Choa Chu Kang boleh

So the next time someone disses Choa Chu Kang for being a boring old town, show the asswipe this article.

And for good measure, flash the Ds at him or her, because nobody, nobody…

Disses Choa Chu Kang on my watch.
