Do you have a case of dandruff as you were growing up? Were you embarrassed whenever you have to wear dark coloured clothes? Especially in sunny Singapore where perspiration seems to occur everywhere on our body, including our scalps, dandruff is a hair problem most of us have.

Dandruff is a common case of flaky dead skin found in our hair. It can be annoying (and obvious) in the hair and may not permanently go away even if you get the most expensive and best-selling hair shampoo.

Fret not, there are a few ways for you to remove or reduce dandruff in your hair naturally just by using products that you might already have at home (if not, easily found in the supermarket)!

Apple Cider Vinegar

According to the well-known Dr Oz, apple cider vinegar is helpful in reducing dandruff in your hair as the acidity in the solution changes the pH level on your head.

This makes the yeast that usually forms dandruff, harder to grow. Simply add 1/4 of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup of water together before spraying them onto your scalp.

You will have to leave it in for 15 to 60 minutes before washing it off. Do this once or twice a week and you’ll soon see results!

Coconut Oil

Known as one of the most commonly used oils in hair products, coconut oil can help aid the removal of dandruff. Use it in replacement of conditioner by using about 3 spoonfuls and massaging it into your scalp and the hairline. Let it soak for an hour before rinsing it off and shampoo normally.

Salt

Yes, salt! The usual salt that you use for adding flavour to your meals can be doubled as a scrub for your hair. Simply shake a few shakes onto your hair before massaging it in and you’ll soon find stubborn dandruff coming off easily with the salt. Shampoo as usual after the scrub.

Garlic

Do you see the pattern of adding items you can find at home to your shampoo routine? Healwithfood mentioned previously that crushed garlic helps in removing the yeast bacteria that caused dandruff.

If you’re not a fan of garlic and its strong smell, you can add honey to the mixture before applying onto your scalp (or use other methods that are mentioned).

Olive Oil

You can drop about 10 drops of olive oil, massage your scalp and leave it overnight. In order to not leave any oily stains on your pillow, we recommend you to sleep with a shower cap on! Remove and shampoo it off in the morning.

Lemon

Don’t be afraid of the acidity in lemons! It may make you squirm from the sourness, but it actually helps in removing dandruff! Similar to apple cider vinegar, the acidity in lemons helps to change the pH level in your scalp.

According to Reader’s Digest, simply massage 2 tablespoons of lemon juice onto your scalp. Afterwards, mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of water before rinsing it onto your hair. Repeat these steps daily until you see results. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
