I believe this is the case for everyone: when we were young, there were always some sounds that gave us the creeps, like fingernails drawing on a blackboard or rubbing a balloon with your bare hands. It’s only when we grow up that we realize these sounds give everyone the creeps.
There’s actually a scientific explanation for this. Saccular acoustic sensitivity is a measurement of our ears’ reaction to sounds, and a normal “measurement” will keep our body in balance—any sounds that are beyond normal and out of the range of the normal measurement will give us the creeps, from feeling uncomfortable to even causing reflexive movements like a twitch or a jump.
These sounds that cause a negative emotional response have apparently been studied by Trevor J. Cox from the University of Salford. While the first is—wait for it—vomiting, here’s a list of 10 sounds that always give us the creeps. Well, at least according to the writers here in Goody Feed.
Fingernails on blackboard
Maybe we put this as the first because all of us, when we were in primary school, experienced this and it became out childhood trauma. Sort of.
Vomit
I won’t suggest you to play the video if you’ve just eaten something.
Squeaky see-saw
It’s not that bad when you watch the video, but in reality, you’ll have broken the see-saw.
Dentist’s drills
I don’t know what is scarier: the sound or the pain.
Violin played very badly
This is a case of a double-edged sword: either you hear the most beautiful music in the world, or you hear this.
Scratching a fork on a plate
I don’t know why would someone want to do that, but it sure is both annoying and crazy.
Microphone feedback
This is a 12-hour video of a microphone feedback. Best video ever.
Using a marker on a Styrofoam
This video doesn’t do the sound justice. You need to hear it first-hand to experience the creeps.
Worn wipers
Wait till you hear it without the water. You’ll be glad that the windscreen didn’t break.
Farts
There’re different kinds of farts: some are funny, some are disgusting, and some really give us the creeps—especially when it’s farting sharp.
