All of us surely seen or met “Ah Bengs” at least once in our lives, and you surely noticed about the difference between past Ah Bengs and current Ah Bengs.
Let’s take a look at the 10 things that Ah Bengs did in the past that modern Ah Bengs no longer do.
Be my stead
In the past, when we are in our secondary school days, you’ll always see Ah Bengs with their girlfriends (also known as Ah Lians). Ah Bengs in the past uses the word “stead”. When they finally want to confess to the Ah Lian that they love, they will ask, “Want to stead?” or “Be my stead leh”. Modern Ah Bengs are more romantic now, the way they tackle a girl is just like the scenes in Taiwanese idol love dramas.
The Poems
Poems are part of Ah Bengs life in the past; they have “gang poems” with a catchy tune. They like to sit together and rap their poems like Jay Chou, you can even get to see some of it on YouTube now. Modern Ah Bengs don’t do that nowadays, they prefer listening to Mandarin love songs and blasting it out loud using their phone.
Conference
There were no smartphones in the past, what we had was Nokia, and that was what the Ah Bengs had too. Ah Bengs used to have phone conference in the past, they reach home after school, and they will have a few other Ah Bengs and Ah Lians in the conference. Nowadays, modern Ah Bengs uses WhatsApp; they have WhatsApp group chats now.
Legendary Hair Bands
Past Ah Bengs uses plain black hair bands to push their long hair backwards. They do this because they feel they look cool with the hair band, and the main reason is, they use the hair bands to keep the shape of their center-parting hairstyles. Modern Ah Bengs no longer have centre parting hairstyles, they wax and spray their hair and look like Koreans or Taiwanese idols.
Sharp-end Combs
Minimarts near secondary schools will always make a good profit from hair combs, especially those with sharp ends. Ah Bengs in the past will always have a black comb with sharp end inside the back of their pocket of their pants. Modern Ah Bengs don’t use them anymore, they just use their hands.
Arcades
Ah Bengs in the past love hanging out at the arcades in the shopping mall. They will always be spending their time there playing arcade games like Daytona (the car racing game) or just sitting around there. Modern Ah Bengs don’t really hang out at arcades anymore, you’ll get to see them at LAN gaming centre playing DOTA 2.
The Love Numbers
The past Ah Bengs uses numbers to express their love to the Ah Lians, they will say “521 1314 3344 9944”, simply because it sounds like “I love you forever” in Mandarin. Modern Ah Bengs don’t do that anymore, by right, any modern guy in the right mind will not do that anymore.
Nicknames
There is always a “Ah Boy” in every group of Ah Bengs in the past, they tend to give themselves a unique nickname; names like “Ah Boy”, “Xiao Boy” or even using “Prince” to represent them. Nowadays, they simply just use their real name.
Techno Music
Singapore used to have a disco called Sparks, where most of the Ah Bengs go to. Techno music was so popular to the Ah Bengs in the past, they know every single techno song during that era. Modern Ah Bengs no longer listen to techno music, they listen to club songs, hip hop or R&B songs.
Striking Colour Pants
The pants were in striking colours, bright yellow, bright red, bright purple, and they were all tailored made. These were worn by the Ah Bengs in the past, they like these bright striking colours and tight skinny pants. Modern Ah Bengs nowadays wears skinny jeans; they have better fashion sense nowadays.
