If you’re sick and tired of hearing about Tokyo DisneySea, Mount Fuji, and the many other famous temples and shopping streets of Japan, this is the post for you. Because honestly, we have heard more than enough about how awesome those places are.
Japan is a pretty big country with plenty of reasons for us Singaporeans to visit, and we refuse to believe that such an awesome place has only these to offer so we began digging. And, oh boy, did we hit the jackpot. Here are 10 underrated Instagram-worthy places in Japan with views so good you will not want to leave anymore.
Shirakawa Village
This UNESCO world heritage site is so beautiful and historic, yet little know about it. Located in Ono district, Gifu prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a small remote village built in “gassho style,” which makes it so unique and amazingly pretty.
The scenic view of the villages alongside the mountains, no matter the season, just makes it more unbelievable and breathtaking.
Kinosaki Onsen
Kinosaki Onsen is a hot spring town in Hyogo. Resembling an old village, this entire town is a hot spring spot with traditional Japanese inns and shops for visitors. Do visit Kinosaki especially if you’re travelling in winter, because your Instagram posts will stun your followers like vegetable.
Lake Ashinoko
Apart from the Fuji Five lakes which tourists often visit hoping to catch a shot of Mt Fuji, there is one more lake you can go to. Lake Ashi, located in the Hakone area slightly outside Tokyo, features an astonishing view of nature. And if you’re lucky enough to catch the shy Mt Fuji, your efforts of getting 100 Instagram likes won’t be in vain!
Mt Norikura
If you’ve already been to Mt Fuji or want something slightly beaten off the track, venture to Mt Norikuradake located on the borders of Gifu and Nagano prefectures. It is Japan’s third tallest mountain, and a potentially active volcano listed among Japan’s 100 famous mountains.
Mori Tower
Everyone knows Tokyo Tower, by knowledge or by your friend’s Instagram post on your feed. But there’s another tower that you can visit for a city view, yes, including Tokyo Tower itself. You won’t be able to see Tokyo Tower if you’re inside it right?
Aokigahara Forest
Aokigahara, or the Sea of Trees, is a vast forest that lies at the base of Mt Fuji. However do take note that this place is not for the weak hearted or non-adventurous because it’s also known as a suicide forest. This beautiful and quiet forest is beautiful and at the same time, haunting.
Okunoshima
A small island located in Hiroshima prefecture, Okunoshima is also known as the Rabbit Island. This place has a long history related to the World War II as a poison gas factory and is now home to tons of rabbits, making it a Rabbit Island. Cuteness level x100!
Tashirojima
Another small island which is located in Miyagi, Tashirojima is the Cat Island of Japan. For the cat lovers, you have reached paradise. Cat cafes are going down because this is an island filled with several hundred felines. You can prepare for an increase of Instagram followers!
Miyagi-zao
In Miyagi prefecture lies another animal spot. Apart from the Cat Island, you can also travel to Shiroshi Zao Village to see … FOXES. If you’re an adventurous and bold animal lover, forget all the small animals. You need to see wild foxes!
Jigokudani Monkey Park
