Reading the title, you may be asking what kind of sounds would we miss. While you are still wondering what we mean, let me enlighten you. Remember the sound of connecting to your internet? Exactly. Here are 11 of such sounds you will definitely remember once you read it.
1. Connecting to your internet
That whirring sound that sounded like an alien spaceship was trying to communicate with us. But that was the sound that let us know if the connection was going to be successful or not. This should also bring back memories of how clunky the whole system was back then. How far we have come!
2. ICQ
Remember this chat group? Way before WhatsApp or Telegram, ICQ was possibly the only way to communicate with your friends via the internet. For those too young to know what this was, it’s something like the current private message channel of FaceBook, with an alert sound that makes us all smile with nostalgia. Uh oh!
3. Opening and closing a CD
Remember the “ker cha” sound when you need to load a CD or eject one from the computer?
4. Windows XP loading music
So many of us use a Mac nowadays that this sound is perpetually lost. If you want to hear it again, you can always log on to YouTube to hear it, just for old times’ sake.
5. Nokia ringtone
You can still set this as a ringtone on your iPhone or Android phone but it’s not the same as hearing it from a real Nokia. We used to set the volume on high so that our friends would know we had a mobile phone.
6. Crazy frog
Most of us will remember that “ding ding ding ding” sound produced by a cartoonish but crazed looking frog. In fact, this frog was in some music that was considered hip back then too!
7. Nintendo
The first 10 seconds is something every kid is familiar with. Every. One.
8. Jurassic Park theme music
How can we forget this? Especially now that we have Universal Studios Singapore, we get to hear this music when we walk into the Jurassic Park area. Possibly the best theme music that has made all of us think dinosaurs each time we hear it now.
9. Spice Girls
They were all the rage back then and their theme song “Spice up your life” was played tirelessly on the radio.
10. The theme song from “Friends”
“So no one told you life was gonna be this way…*Clap clap clap clap*”. If this doesn’t bring back memories, or if you don’t know when the clapping comes in, this was the starting sentence to the theme song from the hit television series “Friends”. A song that was used to seal and justify so many friendships then!
11. Looney Tunes
You cannot forget the “That’s all folks!” at the end of every Looney Tunes cartoon because, well, it is so iconic. This was the sound of happiness of every kid when we are at home after school and waiting to watch some cartoons before we start doing our homework.
