During Singapore’s fourth Budget this year, it was announced that there will be a SGUnited Jobs and Skills package – a programme which aims to create 100,000 jobs, traineeships and skills training opportunities amid the current economic downturn.

And on Friday (3 July), the inaugural SGUnited Job and Skills Fair saw more than 16,000 opportunities being disclosed to the public, as training providers like NTUC LearningHub, Singapore Polytechnic and more lent their weight to the event.

This is certainly a heartening notion as Singaporeans struggle with recession, unemployment and sustainability issues in the ongoing epidemic.

More Than 16K Jobs / Traineeships from 70 Companies Available In First SGUnited Job Fair

According to CNAalmost 7,000 of the 16,000 jobs, traineeships and skills training opportunities at the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Fair conducted yesterday (3 July) were job vacancies from the public and private sector.

In total, almost 70 companies participated in the event, including firms from industries such as manufacturing, F&B, logistics, healthcare, retail and ICT.

Training providers such as NTUC and Temasek Polytechnic were also present.

Organised by a multitude of organisations including Workforce Singapore (WSG), SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the career fair is said to supplement over 12,000 jobs.

“The fair supplements the over 12,000 job placements that have been completed so far through the SGUnited Jobs initiative,” said organisers.

“Close to 70 per cent of these placements were in the public sector, including COVID-19-related, healthcare and digital positions.”

Yeah, the usual safe-distancing officers and of course, the new digital ambassadors (these are just examples and it’s unknown if these positions are still being offered).

More Details

Meanwhile, more details were revealed on Friday about a programme for mid-career workers.

Known as the SGUnited Mid-Career Pathways Programme, it will supply an additional 14,500 traineeships and training programmes for mid-career individuals.

Trainees under this programme will be entitled to a monthly training allowance of up to S$3,000, with the Government co-funding 80 per cent of the sum and the host organiser covering the remainder.

On the other hand, there are close to 3,000 traineeship positions available at the virtual career fair.

Support Schemes

If you prefer not to work and wait for handouts, you deserve a slap on your butt, but here’s still some info for you so that I can hit my word limit.

Over the last couple of months, the Government has come up with a number of schemes, as well as payouts, to supplement the living costs of Singaporeans.

Apart from the SG United Jobs and Skills package, Singaporeans can also apply for the Covid-19 Support Grant or the SIRS scheme for additional assistance. Just don’t abuse the system as two people have already been charged for that.

Eligible Singaporeans will also receive GST vouchers in August 2020. This comes off the back of earlier payouts (not related to GST vouchers), with the most recent one in June.

A payout of S$300 will be issued to them.

Another 545,000 Singaporeans, aged 65 and above, will get GST vouchers in the form of Medisave top-ups on 1 Aug 2020.

The Medi-save top-ups will range between $150 to $450, depending on the recipients’ age and the annual value of their home.

A few hundred dollars aren’t going to last you for long, so here’s the link to the virtual job fair again.
