I‘m sure you’re more than aware, but road accidents aren’t exactly rare here in sunny Singapore.
With bumbling drivers and careless pedestrians gambolling about in broad daylight, it’s no wonder a Google search on ‘car accidents in Singapore’ churns out this:
Yet, in spite of the less than positive representation of the local driving scene, it has to be said that the drivers in Singapore, to be honest, aren’t truly bad. For example, accidents might occur once in a while, but very rarely do ‘really bad’ traffic accidents occur.
“How rare?” you ask.
Well, it’s so rare…
It just happened yesterday (19 Dec).
And to satiate your curiosity on just how bad it is, here’s a measure; it’s that of the holy trinity:
Drink-driving, bo license and an accidental car crash, all rolled into one.
What happened?
In the wee hours of 19 Dec, a 17-year-old boy got into an accident along Teck Whye Avenue, towards Choa Chu Kang Road. According to reports, he had crashed his car into a railing, before hitting a tree.
Stomper Raj, who witnessed the accident, then filmed a snippet of the scene before sending it to the local journalist site. He also dialled the police.
When Stomp called to check, the police confirmed the report, stating that they were alerted to the accident at 1:08 a.m., and had arrested the teenager for drink-driving.
“This was in front of Block 4,” Raj told Stomp, relating what he had seen at the time.
“We heard a loud screeching that lasted for several seconds. Because of the noise and how long it went on for, everyone had time to turn around and see what happened.
“I saw a car coming by at high speed. It then skidded and hit the railing on the central road divider, which caused its front bumper to dislodge and fly off.
“There was a pedestrian crossing nearby, so thank goodness nobody was there at that time.
“The car then continued to skid, before crashing into a tree and ending up on the grass.”
According to STOMP, the accident was not a mere case of careless drink-driving, for the 17-year-old boy in question did not have an actual driving license and had been alone in the car.
Wait. I thought these youths would have friends around, IG-Storying their achievement?
Police investigations are currently ongoing. Incidentally, you can watch Raj’s video down below:

Netizens react
In cases like this you can always expect Netizens to come up with some really sarcastic replies, and naturally…
I’m not disappointed.
Though some did interject some sense into the conversation…
Albeit more relentlessly.
And if this comment were to be taken at face value…
It would appear that it’s no mere trinity, but a goddamn pentagon.
Always take care on the road
Look I’m not trying to be your mother or anything, but the fact remains that the road, no matter what anyone else tells you, is a goddamn dangerous place. Granted it might not be as horrendous as that one race track in Wreck-It-Ralph 2, but it’s still a slaughterhouse for careless drivers.
So take care on the road, and always remember.
Drink? No driving? No drink? Make sure got license. No drink no license?
Get the hell away from that vehicle and start walking home.
According to my colleague who drives, drivers tend to break the rules more in the middle of the night when there are no cars around. Having said that, you as a pedestrian shouldn’t break the rules as well, because you’ll be at the receiving end and break some bones if you think it’s safe.
