There, it’s official: three weeks after the launch of Pokémon Go, the first Pokémon master has emerged. His name isn’t Ash Ketchum, nor does he wear a red and white cap wherever he goes.
His name is Nick Johnson, he’s from Brooklyn, he’s 28 years old and he doesn’t wear a cap.
The first person to announce his victory online on Reddit, with a proof of his catch, he has caught all 142 different types of Pokémon available in the US, with a total of 4,629 Pokémons and 303 eggs. That’s a lot of Pokémons in three weeks.
Nick is more than just a diehard Pokémon fan: he’s also a tech expert. Working as the head of platform in a company that develops mobile apps, I’m sure he’s not just familiar with Pokémons but the mechanics of how the app works, too.
There are supposed to be 150 different types of Pokémon, so the catching 142 isn’t exactly “catching ‘em all”, but very close. Five Pokémons are not released yet, and three other Pokémons are not in the US.
All his Pokémons are caught in Manhattan (the place he works) and Brooklyn, so it’s not like he quit his life job for this quest. Most of his hunts were made between 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Overall, he just spent about two hundred dollars in this epic journey.
Now, here’s the kicker: we all know Pokémon Go requires players to walk, but there haven’t been any numbers to show the health benefits. Nick, with his iPhone Health App, got to calculate the distance he walked, and also the weight he lost.
Overall, he walked about 8 miles (about 13 km) per day, clocking a totality of 129 miles (about 208 km). The Pokémon Go app, however, only managed to track him travelling 95 miles (about 153 km).
That’s like walking on the MRT Eastwest Line three to four times.
Here’s the best news ever to come out from Pokémon Go: he lost about eight to ten pounds (about 4 kg) in the last three weeks. Three cheers for Pokémon Go, please.
Now, his next mission is to look for the three remaining Pokémons in Asia, Australia / New Zealand and Western Europe, and is looking for a company to work with him.
He literally took “catch ‘em all” to a whole new level, and yet here in Singapore, we’re still waiting forever.
