Drunk uncles fighting at the coffee shop is a bit like queues at bubble tea stores in Singapore; if we don’t see them there, it’d be weird.

For those who are not familiar with the tradition of jousting at coffee shops in Singapore, allow me to explain.

Two or more men, who are strangers to each other, will head to a coffee shop to have a meal.

They’ll usually order a beer along with their meal if they’re eating in the night, evening, morning, or afternoon.

While eating, they’ll get to talking and become acquainted with each other. Everything is fine until they take a few sips of their beer.

When this happens, the men, usually uncles, will start getting offended at the most trivial things and start a fight.

Whether it’s a joke about his appearance or the way he eats his Wanton Mee, all his friends will join in and soon a skirmish will break out.

Now, that you know all about coffee shop fights, here’s one that happened recently.

20 People Fight Broke Out at Woodlands Blk 167; Started when One Man got Invited to Another Man’s Table for Drinks

It was a day like any other in Woodlands last Saturday (27 March), except that two large groups of people were seen fighting near a coffee shop.

According to Stompa witness at the scene reported seeing nearly 20 people crowding around the staircase landing and an open-air carpark next to the coffee shop.

A video of the incident also made its way online, and was shared by Shin Min Daily News.

At the beginning of the video, a large group of men can be seen huddled together at a staircase landing, though this was no group hug.

Several people were seen struggling and tussling with each other as others did their best to hold them back.

So, what the heck happened?

Left Coffee Shop For a “Private Settlement”

The police said they were alerted to a case of voluntarily causing hurt at Block 167 Woodlands Street 11 at 10.38pm.

As we all suspected, their investigations revealed that a dispute had occurred earlier between two groups at the coffee shop nearby.

Shin Min Daily News reported that the two groups of unruly patrons had been drinking at adjacent tables at the coffee shop.

A man from one table was invited to the other table for a drink but somehow ended up arguing with one of the patrons.

The confrontation escalated and the men decided to head to the carpark for a ‘private settlement’.

Investigations are ongoing.

The next time you visit a coffee shop, just enjoy your meal and head on home. If you must have a beer, do ensure that there are no other beer drinkers within a 5m radius.
