Us Singaporean males have a truly unique way of proposing to our girlfriends. Something my ex-colleague from China find weird but intriguing.
Something that’s so practical it’s even romantic to some people.
And it is:
“Dear, let’s go ballot for the upcoming BTO lah!”
(Yeah, that was my friend’s face when he found out that’s how my classmate proposed to his GF)
Honestly though, that’s what most of my friends did before proposing to their significant other.
You may call it unromantic, but this is one of the fastest ways to get a HDB flat in Singapore since most BTO takes 4 years or so to complete.
BTO first, wed later, right?
So why is 2018 a good year to get married?
Well, HDB has announced that they will launch about 17,000 flats in 2018.
“For 2018, HDB will maintain a steady supply of about 17,000 new flats, comparable to the 17,584 flats launched in 2017,” said Minister for National Development, Lawrence Wong.
“Over the course of the coming year, new flat buyers can look forward to a good spread of projects across mature and non-mature estates, including flats in the new Tengah town.”
“In the second half of 2018, we will launch about 1,000 flats in Sembawang, Sengkang and Yishun,” the minister added. “These flats will have shorter waiting times of about 2.5 years, instead of the typical three to four years for most other BTO projects.”
Hang on a moment.
2.5 years?! That’s so much faster than my BTO!
The delivery year of my flat is 2021. Does that mean that these flats will be completed earlier than mine?
Boy oh boy, you couples out there, time to consider getting a flat! (If Yishun, Sembawang and Sengkang is ideal for you, that is)
Anyway, according to Mr Lawrence Wong, this year has been “another fruitful year for public housing”. The enhanced CPF Housing Grant for first-time couples was an example of the government’s efforts to help these young couples move into a new home quickly.
Well, I gotta admit that the housing grant was of great help when we were applying for BTO.
As much as this sounds like a great time to buy yourselves a house, please think carefully before plunging into marriage.
After all, buying a house is a lifelong commitment (unless you’re just investing), just like how marriage should be.
