After COVID-19 infected almost every part of the world, our lives were pretty much disrupted and put on hold.
Businesses halted operations and we all stayed home to ensure that we don’t get infected unless we are considered essential workers.
But other than our normal daily lives, the movie industry has also taken a hit as many productions chose to delay their premiere dates.
And now that things are getting slightly better and cinemas are opening very soon on 13 July, you probably would want to know what movies you should definitely catch. After all, it’s been a while since we’ve all been to a cinema, right?
So here is a list of movies that will be released this year that we should be looking forward to!
Escape from Pretoria (PG)
This is a thriller film that is based on the actual prison escape by three young political prisoners from the prison in South Africa back in 1979. It is based on the 2003 book, Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria Prison, which was written by Tim Jenkin, one of the escapees.
This takes place during the apartheid era in South Africa and follows the story of three political prisoners who were charged with “producing and distributing 18 different pamphlets on behalf of banned organisations” back then. Tim Jenkin is played by Daniel Radcliffe and Stephen Lee is played by Daniel Webber. Join them and a few other prisoners as they develop a plan to break out of Pretoria Central Prison.

The Bridge Curse (NC16)
The Bridge Curse is a Taiwanese horror film that tells the creepy real-life experience of a Tunghai University (THU) student.
There is a well-known campus legend at Taichung City’s THU that says that the staircase near the campus bridge will have an extra step at midnight, and the spirit of a female student will appear to ask students who were passing by for the time.
In 2016, a THU student Li Le didn’t think it was true, so he decided to livestream his experience at the bridge. Halfway through his stream, he was told by his Facebook audience that there was a woman figure hanging from the trees behind him.
Li immediately ran away and deleted the video, but screenshots of the livestream show that there was indeed a figure behind him.
The film follows a group of university student organisation members as they try to uncover the truth behind this legend.

Train to Busan: Peninsula (NC16)
Next on the list is the sequel to the blockbuster zombie apocalypse movie, Train to Busan.
When Train to Busan was first released, everyone rushed to the cinemas to watch it because of how good it looked, and now, they’re back with part two!
This movie is an extension of the first movie and takes place four years later. It primarily focuses on the aftermath of the apocalypse where Korea is completely abandoned. Join the last few inhabitants as they try to escape the now-uninhabitable Korean Peninsula.

Mulan (PG-13)
Mulan is a highly anticipated American action drama film that is based on the Chinese folklore “The Ballad of Mulan”.
Mulan is the oldest daughter of Hua Zhou who disguises herself as a man with the name Hua Jun so that she can enlist herself in the Imperial Army in place of her father who is in poor health. Doing so, she also goes against traditions and the law.
Watch as she takes on the different challenges and channels her inner strengths to become an honoured warrior.

A Quiet Place Part II (PG-13)
This horror film is the sequel to the 2018 horror film, A Quiet Place, and is written and directed by John Krasinski.
After what had happened in the previous movie, the Abbott family must now continue to fight for their own survival in silence as they face whatever that is hunting the grounds of the outside world.
As they venture into the unknown, they soon realise that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only dangers.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It/ The Conjuring 3
The all-time famous horror film series is back with a third instalment, and this time, things are even spookier.
This is so spooky that it even gave experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren a shock.
The film starts out with a battle for the soul of a young boy, and after a series of events, the murder suspect claims that in his defence, the devil was the one that made him do the deed.

Wonder Woman 1984 (PG-13)
Wonder Woman 1984 is an upcoming superhero film based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman. This is the sequel to the 2017 Wonder Woman film and is set in 1984 during the Cold War.
The film follows Diana Prince/Wonder Woman as she battles against media businessman Maxwell Lord and friend-turned-enemy Barbara Minerva/Cheetah.
In the midst of her battles, she also gets the chance to reunite with her love interest, Steve Trevor.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins
This film is a military science fiction action film that is supposed to be the third installment and a reboot of the G.I. Joe film series. This film primarily depicts the origin story of the character Snake Eyes.
Henry Golding has been cast as Snake Eyes instead of Ray Park, who had played the character in the previous G.I. Joe films.
Not much information has been released so far but this is a definite must-watch if you’re a big fan of the G.I. Joe series! Stay tuned too for the trailer!

Black Widow (PG-13)
Black Widow is an upcoming superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.
The film happens after the 2016 Captain America: Civil War film and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow finds herself alone and forced to face a dangerous conspiracy that is linked to her past.
In the movie, she embarks on a journey to deal with her history as a spy and must solve the conflicts that she got into way before she became an avenger.

No Time to Die (PG-13)
If you’re a big fan of spy movies, you will definitely not want to miss this.
No Time to Die is an upcoming British spy film and is the 25th installment of the James Bond film series.
The film takes place five years after the capture of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, and James Bond has left active service. However, he is approached by Felix Leiter, his friend and a CIA officer, for his help to find Valdo Obruchev, a scientist that has gone missing.
It is discovered that Obruchev has been abducted and Bond must face a threat more dangerous than the world can ever imagine.
